That's not a terrible fit for him if they have a decent collective. Dude also has a rolodex of high quality assistants that love to work with that guy.

Since the coaches board didn't open here's the latest article I mentioned Skip since the few
Rice is just starting its coaching search but North Texas' Drew Svoboda, Oregon's Drew Mehringer and Florida Atlantic's Tom Herman are all names to watch.
Rice got a jump on its college football coaching search by firing Mike Bloomgren on Sunday with a month still left in its season. The Owls join Southern Miss and East Carolina, who both fired their head coaches last week, as schools entering the market early.
Finding the right fit at Rice is tricky, because promising coaches with coordinator jobs at elite programs probably are willing to wait for a bigger job to come along, so that means looking at younger assistants at top programs or maybe some head coaches with Texas ties looking for a fresh start.
What about Tom Herman? He seems like a long shot since he’s only been at Florida Atlantic two seasons, but things haven’t gone well for the former Rice assistant and a return to Houston could intrigue him.
Grabbing Drew Mehringer may not create as many headlines, but the former Rice quarterback and assistant is making a name for himself on the Oregon staff and would be a nice fit back in Houston.
Here’s a look at some names to watch in the Rice coaching search…
Drew Mehringer, Oregon assistant
Oregon Ducks tight ends coach Drew Mehringer talks to Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix (10) during the Washington State Cougars versus the Oregon Ducks game on Saturday September 24, 2022 at Martin Stadium in Pullman, WA.
Mehringer, who is in his third season as Oregon’s tight ends coach, got his start at Rice, signing with the Owls to play quarterback in 2006 before an injury ended his playing career and led him into a student assistant’s role where he became something of a Tom Herman protégé. He followed Herman from Rice to Iowa State and then to Ohio State before he became a co-offensive coordinator at James Madison at just 26 years old. He spent more time with Herman at UH and Texas and has been at Oregon since Dan Lanning got the Ducks job after the 2021 season. Throughout his coaching career, the 36-year-old Mehringer has been known as a strong recruiter with lots of ties to Texas high school coaches.
Tom Herman, Florida Atlantic
Florida Atlantic Owls head coach Tom Herman talks to his coaches in the booth during a college football game between the Michigan State Spartans and the Florida Atlantic Owls on August 30, 2024, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, MI.
This would be the sexy hire for Rice, but it may not be realistic. After getting fired at Texas in 2021, Herman is in his second season at Florida Atlantic. Normally, a head coach probably wouldn’t jump from FAU to Rice, but things aren’t going well for the 49-year-old in Boca Raton. Just five years removed from winning 11 games under Lane Kiffin, FAU is currently 2-5 after going 4-8 in Herman’s first season. Herman is making $1 million, which is on par with what Rice will be willing to pay. Obviously, Herman also has plenty of ties to Houston, having spent two years as Rice’s offensive coordinator from 2007-08 and two seasons as UH’s head coach before getting the Texas job in 2017.
K.C. Keeler, Sam Houston State

This is the most proven commodity on the list, but there’s doubt whether the 65-year-old, whose Sam Houston team beat Rice by three touchdowns in the season opener, would leave his current situation for Rice. He won FCS championships at Delaware and Sam Houston and already has the Bearkats bowl eligible in just their second season in the FBS. If Keeler were interested in Rice, it would come with a pay raise as he’s one of the lowest-paid coaches currently in FBS at $625,000 a year, according to USA Today. Rice was paying Mike Bloomgren $981,000.
Skip Holtz, UFL
Head coach Skip Holtz of the Birmingham Stallions holds the USFL Conference Champion Trophy after defeating the Michigan Panthers at Protective Stadium on June 8, 2024 in Birmingham, Alabama.
Would the 60-year-old son of legendary coach Lou Holtz want to get back into college coaching? His tie to Rice is that current Owls athletic director Tommy McClelland was the Louisiana Tech athletic director during part of Holtz’s nine-year run as head coach there. Holtz had some success in his stops as head coach at UConn, East Carolina, South Florida and Louisiana Tech, but he was fired at Louisiana Tech after a 3-9 season in 2021, a year after McClelland left. Holtz has spent the past three seasons in the USFL/UFL, leading the Birmingham Stallions to three straight championships.
Jon Kay, Rice assistant
North Shore head coach Jon Kay holds up the 6A Division 1 State Championship trophy after the team defeated Duncanville for the title at At&T Stadium in Arlington on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021. North Shore won the game 17-10.
Pete Alomar is taking over as Rice’s interim coach for the rest of the season, but if someone on the current staff is a candidate for the full-time gig, it’s probably Kay. The Rice linebackers coach was one of the state’s best high school coaches, winning four state championships at North Shore before joining the Rice staff in 2023. There’s a track record of Texas high school coaches making the successful leap to leading their own college program, including currently with UTSA’s Jeff Traylor and Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire.
Drew Svoboda, North Texas assistant
Rice Owls assistant coach Drew Svoboda watches a replay during game against the Texas Longhorns on September 14, 2019, at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
Svoboda is another example of a successful high school coaching transitioning to college. Svoboda was the head coach at Klein Collins for 10 seasons before joining the Rice staff as running backs coach in 2018. He spent three seasons at Rice before moving on to Memphis for a year, then two seasons at Alabama as Nick Saban’s special teams coordinator. He was named North Texas’ associate head coach in 2023 and the Mean Green are currently a win away from bowl eligibility.
Clint Killough, Incarnate Word
UIW's coach Clint Killough complains to the officials about a non-call on a play during the first half of their Southland Conference football game with Nicholls at Tom Benson Stadium on Saturday, Oct 12, 2024.
Marvin Pfeiffer/Staff Photographer
He’s only 31 years old, so this might be a little early for Killough, but his career is off to a good start. The San Antonio native spent one year as a graduate assistant at Bowling Green before returning to his alma mater as an assistant in 2018. He took over as head coach in 2023 and led UIW to an 8-2 season and has UIW ranked in the Top 10 in the FCS currently. Killough’s predecessors at UIW are G.J. Kinne and Eric Morris, who are having success as head coaches at Texas State and North Texas, respectively.
