Get a good roto hammer-either buy or rent- try to get a 3" wide chisel and get a good bit of sweat equity.
It will come up and it you work it right the thinset will come up as well.
I've done probably 10,000 feet since the flood. It is work but by yourself 550 sf will take you a day including cleaning and having a few beers.
Just grind it out and good luck.

And all for friends. Not for cash. But a few of us have done it. Couple roto hammers, couple wheelbarrow and a couple of scoop shovels and yep a few beers. Works well.
Have about 1000 sf brick pavers coming up this weekend. Started on them this afternoon since I had a few hours to spare. They come up the same as the tile.
Just duck your head and get to work. When you look up it is done.

Rented the large hammer drill on a cart last Sat and did 1800-2000'sq ft of ceramic tile. It costs $185.00 for 24 HR rental at Home Depot, took us about 8 hrs. Thank God for 2 grown sons, the 3 of us knocked it out. Found mold under 1 tile. We were changing it anyway.

Pain in the arse. I went rent a jackhammer at Home Depot. Pulled up about 650 sq ft and it was miserable.

Saws all with the chisel blades. Get spares, you'll need them. Use a hammer to get a spot to start.
