Just admit that you always strike out with women. That's why you're so angry.

I'm agnostic and haven't been to a mass in almost 20 years. Doesn't change the fact that you're coming on so strong that you are either legitimately stupid or jaded by an experience.

I'm all for taking the priest to dinner after the baptism. But, what does a $100 tip do differently than a $100 donation in the Sunday offering plate ?

I never considered it a "tip". Its always been an extra donation to the church to show appreciation for services. We did give the priest at our wedding money, but he traveled over an hour to marry us.

I think (and hope, honestly) that the tradition started with a gift, like a dinner, and we've just become so lazy that people just decided they'd rather give the priest some money somewhere along the line.

However, the money in the collection plate goes to a lot more than the priest's modest salary. Like I jokingly said in my first post, a gift is the way to go.

Correct. It's an honorarium to show appreciation to the officiant. Just like at weddings & funerals. It's not that difficult. And it's not in the same category as a tip unless you are a crass non-appreciative oafish type person.

Not really. That money is for the priest. Not the church. My family has given gifts to our priest so he could go enjoy a nice night out. This is in addition to regular tithings.

When did a baptism become a trip to TGI Fridays?

Is this just a Catholic thing? Is it different because protestant baptisms are a part of the service?

We had the option to do it during mass or just with family. We chose to do it by ourselves so we could take pictures and because our son was a bit older at 10 months. Good thing too, because he high fived the priest during the blessing. It was 2 weeks ago and we tipped him 100.

Priests have a call to serve the congregation. No way do I tip a priest. Sacraments are not for sale. Any priest asking for money should be reported to the local diocese. This is no joke.

If you want to ask a priest or deacon to dinner that is fine. The Catholic Church is rich enough. Baptism is a gift. It is not for sale.
