Are we talking the same rate that we would here in the states? or more like .75 to the dollar?

More like $.25 on the $1.00.

Why would you tip a different percentage of your bill/tab than you would here? Is the kind of service any different?

Not all countries have the same tipping culture. I have no idea what expectations in Mexico are like.

This. If anything, the service I've gotten when staying in Mexico was much better than service in the U.S. Many of those servers at Mexican resorts are trying to support their families with their wages.

do not do currency exchange at the airport. Rip off! Do it at your destination. Atlanta had a currency exchange at 16.23 pesos on the dollar. Got to Cancun and it was over 17 everywhere we went

You don't even really need to exchange money in Mexico. Pretty much any place will take U.S. money.

Do they have Sonics in Mayheco?

I know that this may sound foreign to some on this board, but in other countries people can often be offended by the amount of tip you leave. Not saying that you should adjust your normal tipping behavior, but expectations are usually much lower and tipping 18-20% can be taken in a positive or negative light.

And the dollar goes way further there as well. If they want american dollars they should sneak into america and work at a chicken plant like the rest of them

I guess I just wasn't that worried about it, tbh. I was on vacation having a great time and when I received excellent service, I felt like being generous. Some of those areas in Mexico depend heavily on tourism to survive. What's an extra few bucks to me?

do it at a bank before you leave and you'll probably get a better rate
ETA: I tip just like I do at home

This reminds me of one of the funny Mexico story.
My buddy and his wife got married and went to Cozumel for their honeymoon. As soon as they got off the plane they stopped at a restaurant to get a bite. A mariachi band was playing music for the tables and making the rounds.
The band finally gets to them and begins their pitch, "A song for the lady?"
"No thank you, it's alright" my buddy responded.
"Come on, one for the lady..." The band leader insisted.
"Nah dude, seriously. We're good." Again he replied.
Back and fourth they went and finally my buddy said, "I don't care what you do."
They play a stereotypical mariachi band song and no shite on the last strum of the last chord they all froze and stared down my buddy and his wife. They clapped and said, "Thank you." and went back to eating.
Here's where it gets awkward. The band leader leans in to my buddy and says, "I don't think you understand. We play for tips."
My friend says, "Well I told you repeatedly that we were good without a song."
A small bilingual argument ensued.
They continued to stare until my friends new wife kicked him under the table and he coughed up a couple bucks.
The funny thing was, a few months later they were watching the travel channel about Cozumel and there those bastards were, doing their thing.
