All of the stupid shite they're doing on that app is already in the public domain.

You don't realize that apps can collect and send data that's on the phone itself? Texts, pictures, videos...

You’ll never get through to them man. They think tikitok is harmless because it’s just dance videos.

The ignorance and naïveté on display in this thread is honestly sad

You are no different than the people who want to abolish police but still call them.

Or the people that are against capitalism and corporations but gladly spend their money and give data to these corporations.

Or females against the patriarchy, but still expect men to act like we are in a patriarch society.

Our government has intel that Tik Tok is feeding mass amounts of user data to the Chinese government, who is or already are using it back against the US.

I guess that’s my point...who enters “mass amounts of data”in an app into an app such as this. I personally think the app is nothing but foolishness and I don’t care if it exists or not. But is it really a matter of national security as they are claiming?

You think you have to enter the data for the app to harvest it? How cute.

CIA analysts concluded that it is possible for China to siphon off data from TikTok since it is owned by Chinese tech firm ByteDance, but there is no evidence they have done so, according to the New York Times.

The Trump administration hasn’t accused China of already taking Tik Tok data on U.S. users, but has instead warned that China could potentially track the locations of federal employees, build dossiers of personal information for blackmail and conduct corporate espionage with TikTok data if it wanted to.
Anyone with half an ounce of hacking skills can "siphon off data" from virtually any social media platform and use it in the same way if they wanted to. Our own government has done it to its own citizens and those of other countries. That is one reason China banned Twitter. Google regularly gives law enforcement access to people's location tracking, literally down to the foot. The EU cracked one of the most heavily encrypted networks in the world and tracked major criminals for months.

I'm sure that's it. TikTok is certainly the best for that...not spy satellites and other intelligence gathering avenues.

I'm curious, are you implying there is no useful data to be collected using both AI and millions of live/real data collectors? Seems to me, that the background data collected in all forms can provide meaningful pieces to a puzzle when properly sorted and analyzed by any agency. How do you think our intelligence agents work on collecting data from various sources for analyzing? I'm sure its not limited to satellite and drone views.

There's a problem here with this story...it indeed may be true, but the reporting is more than questionable without actual citing the name of the source. Maybe I've missed that in previous reports.

You appear to be very knowledgeable on the subject....why don’t you give us a few examples of personal data that you could get from an anonymous video that would be damaging to national security?

The data isn’t coming from the video. It’s coming from the app accessing every bit of the data on your phone.

First, nothing on TikTok (or any social media) is anonymous. It's all traceable to a real person.

Second, it constantly tracks the location of all users, regardless of whether or how much you post, or even look at it (unless you have your GPS always off).

Third, it accesses all your Microsoft, Apple, Firefox, Google, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc., activity (again, unless you specifically turn it off). Once it's downloaded to your phone, it scrapes all data from every other app on your phone.

However, to be fair, this not much different than most apps (all the above-mentioned do the same thing). Someone with the right skills and wrong intent could do just as much damage with Facebook or Candy Crush or Wordscapes (or even Tiger Droppings) as they could with TikTok.

Every developed nation (and probably most developing nations) has a security agency dedicated to abusing social media data in this way.

you take away many teens favorite app and they will head to the polls for the first time

Interesting view...I think the RGB is more of a driver to the polls. The teens that use this app have already downloaded it and will not see the effects until after the election. By that time, there will be replacement options adopted and used. They'll simply move to a "new" more exciting platform to continue with like they moved from MySpace to FB to Instagram to TikTok. Just speeding up the evolution. They won't even miss TikTok in 60 days and it'll go the way of MySpace. It is interesting that the "turnoff" happens AFTER the election and with plenty of time for the switch. In a "have to have it now" society and many news cycles between now and the actual turnoff, this will be a blip in memories of the short term memory of those that use. Been there, done that, Move on to the next thing.
