I went to Panama on business a few years ago. Me and my manager ended up with a free day so we hired a local guide to show us the "real" Panama. It's pretty much a third world shite hole once you get away from the tourist areas.
I learned my lesson then. Whenever you go to somewhere like the Caribbean or Central America, stick to the tourist areas.
