I'm guessing shotguns aren't often used because of their limited ability to kill outside of a relatively short range.

If there are already extended waiting periods for certain types of guns (and I believe there are), you already have your answer...it's constitutional.

There are restrictions on buying automatic weapons and those restrictions have been held to be constitutional because (in the Court's opinion) the government showed a compelling government interest in restricting access.

I have posted, what, like 6-7 different possible scenarios of possible solutions. Every time shot down because it infringes on someone’s rights apparently because we live in a world where you should get whatever you want no matter what. But I’ve literally have gone from in this thread to suggesting applying the same laws Australia uses for gun control to only doing the same exact background check for semi automatic rifles as you do automatic rifles. So literally, just increasing the background check of semi automatic rifles. You can even exclude hunting rifles out of that or rifles that hold a certain magazine size.

But saying that nothing should change at all when there is an obvious problem is baffling. I get it, YOUR rights. But what happens when that’s your kid in that school? They can’t defend themselves with any gun since they can’t bring it to school. And lord, how terrible of an idea it would be to let teens hopped up on hormones bring guns to school too.

The problem isn't with gun ownership. It's with mental health the insanely selfish and completely lacking in self responsibility state of our society.

And that's where the courts will come in again. I'm sure in the minds of some who will be pushing it forward, every time one of these things happen, the case becomes more compelling. Though I'm not a constitutional attorney.

No, it isn’t just a mental health thing. That is a huge issue, yes. And guns don’t kill people, people kill people. But people relapse on mental health issues all the time.

You can argue that maybe if they have certain mental health issues, THEN they cannot pass a background check in order to purchase a semi automatic rifle? But I’m sure some nut will say that violates their rights as well. And so then we’re stuck in the same situation.

Many of the other "fixes" infringe on the rights of the kids/targets.

Fair enough. This is why I'm glad Trump will likely be making 2 appointments to SCOTUS.

Right. "Common sense gun regulation" is code for "my way or the highway"

Link?

But Rais Akbar, juvenile justice policy director for Advocates for Children and Youth, said there is overwhelming research that guns haven't prevented tragedies. And further research shows that over-policing in schools has a negative impact on students, including a rise in juvenile arrests, Akbar said, with barely any research showing guns improve school safety. "Given that imbalance, it suggests we should have less policing," Akbar said. "There are a lot of nightmare scenarios that can happen, but they don't, which means that argument amounts to nothing more than fear-mongering."

And before you say this is not a gun-control group.

So far, one gun enthusiast has said he would be okay with a compromise with a heavier background check or magazine size capacity limit...and everyone else is unwilling to change anything in any way because “my rights”.

It’s funny I have to separate by calling others gun enthusiasts in this thread, but what I really mean are nuts who want an assault rifle in every persons hands. I’d never give up my shotguns or my shitty 30-06. But I’d been okay having to waiting a few months to a year for any of the guns if it in someway, possibly had an impact on preventing these mass shootings and parents having to bury their children.

I'm not as good as you guys at quickly identifying guns by sight. Looking at it again I see the narrower barrel. The rest looks almost exactly like the 12 gauge my dad has.

Most likely because the only real difference you would see would be legit buyers being hassled.

Gun control is an emotional reaction to a serious problem. If you want to see a real difference, change the liability of owning a gun used in a crime.

Well it's as far from a 12 ga as you can get. It's a model 60 .22
Probably one of the most popular firearms ever produced. Many kids get those for Christmas.
