They had a pitcher that was throwing low 80's easy and maybe mid 80's. She said he was their best player. A couple weeks later she told me that he wasn't on the team anymore b/c his parents couldn't afford it.
bullshite
The best player on most teams can always afford it

Pitching machines should be used at that age like they were when I was a kid in the early 80s
My 10 year olds team uses pitching machines. We may be the last rec league in Baton Rouge.

A bunch of idiots decided to have 9-10 year olds pitch and it ruined the overall development of players in rec ball.
Try 8-9. That’s when kids pitch starts at some of these parks.
FWIW, my 7 year old (1st grade) played against a bunch of 3rd graders whose parents lied about their age last weekend. 5 out the park home runs in coaches pitch. The a-hole parents found out about our league.

I never played travel but rec is nuts now unfortunately. My 8th grader does both middle school and travel. His middle school team needed him to field a team so he joined. They actually scrimmaged his travel team but the year younger team. The game was over in the 1st. The issue is 50% of middle school kids on the team don’t even know baseball rules and some cannot even throw a baseball or hit. Beyond that, the practices are not actually practices either. You shouldn’t get knocked for choosing an organization to practice fundamentals and play competitive schedules. It has nothing to do with college it’s just not choosing a telletubbi version of baseball.
I do recommend rec for all the ballers who are on the road and making so much bank you couldnt bother ever showing your own son how to throw a ball or use his glove in anyway. If he was raised by momma or daycare and you still dont care, Rec is perfect.

And how many 7 year olds did yall cut in your “developmental” league that teaches “fundamentals”?

You realize rec league is the less expensive of the 2, right?

I’ve never had a 7 year old in travel so yes. I was discussing an 8th grader.
Also, found the baller.

So you aren’t discussing the topic of the OP? Cool.

OP didn’t mention age. Our little league does a rec/travel hybrid at that age. All kids have to do rec but they have a hybrid travel team to get their core ready for World Series team.

but one could ague that local rec league baseball was a huge part of american culture in a way that basketball/cheer/dance/etc. never were and it's sad to see it fade into the abyss.
I’m heavily involved in my local LL. It binds communities, and it’s one of the few civic institutions we have left. We should fight for it.

Oh bullshite. The majority of Tournament Ball teams are free and coached by parents.
PLEASE give me details on how this works. I’ve lost sleep worrying about athletic, disadvantaged kids getting priced out of baseball and softball. I’ve lost friends pushing my local LL to offer a middle ground that develops our best kids and keeps them in league. If you have some sort of magic wand, then please wave it, so I can get some sleep and stop pissing people off.

I hate travel ball. However, kids get left behind if they don’t play it and want to play high school ball.
Rec game seasons are 12-15 games and you’d be shocked at the amount of Dads that have never played catch with their kids. It’s also watered down.
I’m on my 2nd kid playing travel ball and I absolutely hate it. The first one is a high school player on a team that will finish with a State Championship if they keep on like they are. There are a couple kids that didn’t play travel ball on the team and they will never see the field. It’s sad. But it is what it is.
I freakin hate weekends at the ball park. It’s not the way baseball is meant to played.

My two bits; with the exception of baseball, pickup schoolyard ball with friends was a lot more fun than any organized ball.
The reason baseball doesn't fit here is because you would spend half your time chasing foul balls. Whiffle ball was a blast.

Bottom line is that it can be as low key or as out of control as you make it.
While I understand that there are vastly different levels of tournaments, if you play tournaments the majority of organizations practice (and play) year round. Most parents don’t want this

There is. Baseball is just the sport most in the OT are most familiar with for youth athletics

Church leagues have picked up where Rec ball has fallen off

The only hope for rec would be baseball gets so fricking expensive people have to come back. I sure don't want that for anyone.
Travel ball already is ridiculously expensive. My nephews both play a f it's a strain on my sister, but they love it. My one nephew made the radwogs team in Mobile, which is the best team in Mobile/Baldwin Co, so we're happy for him. I played for them when I was a teenager, as well, so it's super cool.

Spend a lot on PlayStation games and Pokémon cards don’t you?

I see a lot of fundraisers too. Unless a kid comes knocking on my door selling raffle tickets, I’m not donating.
I do have a question, though. For the fundraisers like the bullshite “pick a day on the calendar, donate that amount” thing, does the money go into a pot for the whole team? Or does it go to the specific kid whose parent made the post?

My beef with travel ball/ tournament ball whatever you want to call it, is that it doesn’t stay in season. It has spilled over into every season. This is at 8 years old and even younger.
During football season kids either missing games or being late because of baseball. During basketball season same thing. Not to mention countless birthday parties and other kid activities missed all for baseball. Parents living their baseball dreams through their kids are going to get these kids injured or mentally fricked. Constantly being pushed all over the place. Never allowing the body or mind to truly relax and heal or just do kid stuff.
The mental aspect is probably the worst part but probably hardest to measure.
At our school we actually have school baseball starting at 1st grade my kid is in 3rd and it blends a handful of rec ball kids with mostly travel ball kids. So I get to see both worlds side by side.
When a travel ball kid strikes out or gets out it is a full fledged meltdown. Which is usually followed by a parent dressing down their kid to get your fricking head in the game. Rec ball kid, is upset but the reaction is more oh darn and is followed by a shoulder shrug.
All this to say, there should be a more advanced league, however it should stay in baseball season. Put the bat and ball down for 6 months or whatever amount of time. Play other sports in between or just be a kid ride bikes, play in a ditch, build a tree house, whatever. Just do something other than baseball.
