re: Thinking of buying a salvaged title vehicle

I just went through something similar.
I bought a 2000 wrangler 3 years ago and the title was marked "replacement." That's how it showed up on carfax too. I was fine with that.
So in those 3 years, Carfax decides that replacement *may* mean salvage and puts that notation in the history.
I had a bitch of a time selling it. I had 4 people really low ball the price on that basis and 3 say they wouldn't purchase with that title.
The good news is that when it did sell, it sold for only $1000 less than what I had paid 3 years earlier.

You fix the car, get liability insurance and drive it to the State Police behind the DMV on Independence.
They inspect it and make sure you have receipts.
Then you go to notary that deals with the dmv with the state police inspection and receipts in hand.
You'll have to fill out some paperwork. No big deal.
The notary will turn in the Salvage title and you will get a "Reconstructed" title in the mail.
Then you go get the Inspection sticker. Just like normal, every year.
You will never get anywhere close to blue book value for later sales or trading it in. But you're likely that get many years of driving a dependable vehicle, if you take care of it.

I bought a salvaged loaded out 06' Nissan Titan in 07' from Community Auto in Gonzales. Salvaged vehicles is their thing.
The truck only had 8,000 miles on it. The dealership showed me pictures of the truck when it was wrecked, which was a front end collision.
I drove the truck for 9 years with the only major repair being a fuel pump.
I paid $16,500 and the truck was probably worth over $30k new.
When I decided to get a new truck, I didn't want to bother with selling it outright because of the title. I got $3200 for a trade value. Might could have got $4500 if I sold it outright but it wasn't worth the headache IMO.
My experience was great and I basically got to drive a new truck that otherwise I would not have been able to afford.
It's definitely a gamble. A person buying a salvaged vehicle needs to do their research on the vehicle and the business selling the vehicle.

Honestly I would just buy an inexpensive used car from a reputable dealer. You can find one with high miles for less than 8k. Maybe find an old Accord or something with 120k miles on it.
All of this but don't buy from a dealer. Take your time and look around and you can find a great deal. Just bought a 2001 Accord for my retired Dad. It was literally the little old lady who just drove it to church situation. 46,000 miles and has only been serviced by Honda of Covington. paid 3500 bucks for it. Not a single dent and interior was spotless. Only thing wrong is that even though it was garage kept, being 16 years old the paint is faded a bit.
The point is these deals are out there you just have to have cash ready and take your time looking.

You guys are crazy to buy anything with severe enough frame damage to total the vehicle out. No way it can be repaired to be crashworthy anymore. You're literally risking your life.

And in walks the stupid guy who hasn't read the thread and doesn't know a damn thing.

I bought a truck that had a salvage title. Bought it from a mechanic who took vehicles, repaired them, and then sold them himself. He had a good reputation, so I bought it.
I had it for about 2.5 years with no issues, ran great. Then I sold it for about 1K less than I paid for it. Good investment for me.

Yeah dumbass, I know enough to know a brand new truck, with only 8k miles, is totaled into a salvage title in a front end collision is no longer safe...

Be honest, your whole family is nothing but gumps, right?
Of course the vehicle is unsafe after the accident and before being repaired. Do a little research on what is required to get a reconstructed title on a vehicle that previously had a salvage title before you come in here spouting your ignorance.

Lots of hail totals in Dallas and Denver at the mint at salvage yards

No you nitwit. The vehicle is still unsafe AFTER being repaired. It cannot be repaired to factory new condition as for as crumple zones and crash worthiness.
