I disagree. There is plenty to do around here. Outdoor activities, breweries, concerts, etc

Great place to raise kids.

Not too much in the way of clubs. The folks around here won't have sex standing up because they fear it might lead to dancing. Major-league stiffs. Wouldn't swing if you hung them.

From my experience (Homewood/Birmingham), this is pretty accurate. Not too bad of a place and it is fun for a couple of days, but after that, you've essentially seen it all.

It's an Alabama/Auburn post-grad haven.

Truthfully, most of my friends either have a place on one of the lakes nearby, or have a place at the beach. They all go elsewhere to have fun, so their neighbors can't see them.

I always "stay" in Homewood when I visit, but I'll check out some of my favorite spots (J. Clyde, Hop City, Saw's, etc.).

It's an alright town if you are from there or were in ______ (insert Alabama/Auburn fraternity/sorority). But, if that isn't the case...well, good luck. It could get old in a matter of days.

I've also picked up a sense of Birmingham "elitism" coming from the locals which is just absolutely fricking hilarious.

When compared to the surrounding areas, Bham is NYC and L.A. rolled into one. You can be in Atlanta in 2.5 hrs, Nashville in 3, Memphis or the Gulf Coast in 4. Just not much going on other than food, sports and outdoor sporting activities.

Yep, if you are into clubs it isn't for you. But if you like being outside it is a pretty good town.

I must have missed your post where you made actual recommendations. Sure, you could go to a park, which is an outdoor activitiy, but you could do that in any city in the USA. There is above average golf there though.

Like I said, it's a pretty town, the scenery is quite nice, but there just aren't that many cant miss things to do. However, there is enough to do that you wouldn't necessarily call it boring.

I would propose that this is due to culture, where the folks seem to get married extremely young, even by the rest of the southern standards. Just not a lively atmosphere where people demand things to do. I will say that it is heading in a better direction in the past 10 years or so, and haven't been there in a couple of years. But, I have had 2 friends with SO's move back and backtrack their careers during that time because it was hard to make friends that we're relatable/ever wanted to hang out. Also have a friend from there that I met as an adult that won't be going back.

I have spent a good deal of time there, this isn't a blind opinion, and not meant as a knock on the city, just my view of reality. There was a very real chance I was going to move there for my wife, so believe me I have had to look at the bright side.

How many other 250k pop. towns have that many can't miss type of things? There is plenty to do just in museums to keep someone busy here for a week.

I am kind of a chameleon like that. I think that settles it...we may move there. You aren't leaving any time soon, are you?

You'll get a lot of jokes but Birmingham has basically gone from shitty to one of the best foodie towns in the USA.

You need to get out more.

It has gone from terrible to solid. Claiming anything more than that is ignorant or a lie

Bro, I have over one million frequent flyer miles, lived in 7 states and South America for over a year. Per capita, Birmingham is probably the best city for food in the US.

There's 1.15 mil in the metro area. Based on that population, it is lacking. Not terribly, but it is a bit. They are working on in though, and it's getting better.

Yeah but most of that metro area stay in their suburbs and spend all of their time shopping and eating in strip malls. I had friends that lived in Hoover, Vestavia, Trussville etc., and they're all just strip mall communities built around 1-2 highways where everyone lives in subdivisions in cookie cutter McMansions.

Not that there's anything wrong with being into that kind of life but my impression is that there was always resentment from the white, well off folks in the 'burbs that watched Birmingham slip away from their control. Seems to be changing, though
