I need a refresher on 'lay' and 'lie'.

Yeah. One of the easiest ways to remember the very basics of lie v. lay is to think: "I lie."

It rhymes, "lie" has an "I" in it, and the phrase gives you the basis of the principles at play--"I lie" indicates that lie does not take a direct object.

You are always laying something, not lying something. Another helpful trick is to think about what you are saying in terms of what "lay" means -- to place.

"I place it" makes sense. "I place" is incomplete. An object is needed for you to place.

Typing fast and not editing is different than being ignorant to the basics of the English language.

I think you're erroneously labeling these as editorial mistakes, considering how often they occur.

And if everyone truly knew these words, and had them mastered; you would see people naturally use them correctly, thus negating the editorial argument.

I do it on purpose sometimes. Somethings have been used in error so long they are accepted as being correct, and people smugly correct the misuse.

I like it when people correct misuse and then make absurd mistakes in their corrections.

I've never understood the whole grammar Nazi thing - at least during a heated discussion or argument. Words are the medium of communication on message boards and social media. When someone tries to make a point or win an argument, they're ostensibly doing so from a position of knowledge - or at least that's what they want others to think. When such a person stumbles over basic grammar and spelling, their status as the smartest person in the room should get questioned. Most often they reply with the modern day "your mamma" - dropping out a grammar Nazi reference, which is a complete non sequitur to whatever it was they were talking about.
