The moon is an artificial satellite created by the beings that inhabited what we call Pangaea, they advanced to the point that they could create whatever they needed via nanobots, it also essentially allowed them to live forever (sans anything sudden) because the nanobots could fix whatever was wrong.

When humans evolved to a certain point a Schism occurred within the group between those that wanted help and those wanted to simply observe. The ones that wanted to help left the complex taking with them devices that could be used to control the nanobots

Because of the ability to transform objects and seemingly create things out of thin air, humans couldn't understand how this happens, so they began to think of them as Gods and over time, so did they.

The ones that stayed behind didn't like what was happening and tried to get them to stop, but they wouldn't.

This eventually led to a war between the two that took place in what we know now as India, the Gods almost won but a last ditch suicide attack that consisted of a massive nanobot swarm programmed to take out both Gods and Observers as well as the debris from the battle and where the Gods lived.

The Observers forgot to program in three things, the nanobot controller which was found and became what know as the Holy Grail, the nanobots which is why the Earth weighs more than it shoud, and the facility in Antarctica which is why all the worlds governments are there.
