Both are pretty damn good places, but with different feels to them.
I live in one of them, but if I wasn’t here I would live in the other if still in the Houston area. Just gotta see which fits your needs and wants better.

If you like Indians and Asians, go to Sugar Land. Or if you are a democrat.

How would you describe the differences in feels? Sugar Land is more suburban and The Woodlands is more of a bedroom community? I've never been to the later.

I love Asians and think they make communities better. Indians, I'm not sure about. They probably have the best food. At work they can be kind of toxic/backstabbing but maybe I just had a lot of coincidental bad luck with them.

Get out of my head! You are asking all the questions I'm wondering too. I'll be moving in 4 months and looking to lease something W-NW of the city. Haven't decided much more than that though. I still have time before my lease here off 290 is up.

The Woodlands is an easy choice over Sugar Land. Every restaurant you could think of, nice forest areas, easier to get to Dallas too. Safe area, except for a lot of cougar women (lol). But overall, Houston area is too freaking big- the growth is just gobbling up everything. Crime not bad in The Woodlands, but anything in Houston or Harris County is out of control. Liberal Democrats have power, which means criminals are the 'good guys' typical of any big liberal city today.

Lived in both, a lot more time in Sugar Land though.
Its a tough call. In my opinion, both places are better than any suburb in Louisiana with the possible exception of Mandeville.
In Sugar Land, you can find great subdivisions within 5 mins of the Southwest Freeway and you are only 11 miles to the Galleria, 16 miles to downtown. The Woodlands is more spread out and it is tougher to find single family housing within 10 mins of I-45. Once to I-45, you are still 27 Miles to downtown and 30 plus miles to the Galleria. Once in Sugar Land though, surface traffic especially on the weekends seems to be worse.
They both have great schools, conservative for the most part (The Woodlands moreso), with very little crime and almost non-existent violent crime. Both full of good chain and independent resturants and every choice of big box store imaginable.
Sugar Land has a LOT of Asian/Indians who make great neighbors, drive down the crime, and drive up the school ratings, but if it takes awhile to get used to if you haven't experienced it. The Woodlands, while not lily white, has a lot less diversity. There isnt really a dangerous or bad part of either area and no lower class to speak of.
The biggest advantage of Sugar Land over The Woodlands is distance to Houston. If it weren't for that, I would easily choose The Woodlands. The Pavilion/Water front area is cool as hell, and has an infinite more amount of green space/trees. High School athletics is also much bigger there. You cant go wrong in either, but spend a half day in both and you will easily see the differences that appeal to you.

If you voted Biden, Sugarland is where you want to be!

Some things I like about TW, lots of big music acts that you can hear for free (and BYOB) on the nice lake area back side of Pavilion.
Con of being so far from Houston but also a big Plus as that feels like a great thing in many ways. The Houston trash keeps spreading to most Burbs.
At gym and restaurants, you realize it’s more diverse than advertised. Lots of upper middle class Mexican, S. American, & European influence. Not as much Asian & Indian as Sugarland.
I like having Conroe and the 1488 part of Magnolia so close.

Lived in The Woodlands 3 different times for over 10-years total.
If you are into wife-swapping, that is your residence gig.
It is a master planned community that many people like. Nice place! However, it can kill your soul (commute to downtown, overly corporate mindset, hyper-negatively/competitive human beings. Howevever however, bad azz music venue (Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion) and some great Tex Mex.
My daughter born there. Great friends there. After 3 times, I swore I would never live there again. I mean it.

There is a large Mexican upper class (eg, Sterling Ridge, etc). Had some neighbors who invited my son to school party. The guys with guns at the driveway gave away that their "business" was not ice cream and belts (as they told me) but cartel types. Kids went to Coulson-Tough school, and trust me, was less than impressed with the "no child left behind" approach to school tests in TW!
Over-rated

Thanks for the reviews.
At first glance it seems like SL has closer access to more jobs because of proximity to West Houston and the Energy Corridor but there appears to be a ton of growth in office jobs in the Northern suburbs like TW, Conroe, Spring, etc.
I think having immediate access to alternate employment opportunities is important these days.

Sooooo Sugar Land won't be good in football but maybe tennis?

Lived in both within the past five years. Prefer the woodlands for better going out options and being easier to get to other places in Texas. Both are trending towards suburban sprawl with little noticeable character

If you are going to be anywhere west of the loop and along or south of Katy Freeway (I-10), Sugar Land will cut your commute by 2/3, easily. Also, the Southwest Freeway is one of if not the most complete, least congested in Houston. More alternate routes as well with the Westpark Tollway and surface streets options.
Also, there is a really good chance you will be in the triangle formed by Sugar Land, I-10 west and the Galleria area if you are in the energy field.
Again, The Woodlands is awesome, that commute though is rough.
