The Weird Obsession With Your Kids Going to Same High School As You

It's Open House season for the NOLA Catholic high schools, (virtual in many instances) and so people are talking about tuition, where kids will go to school, etc.
I went to a Catholic school in NOLA for high school.
A number of people I know did as well. So many of them with kids, today, say, "My kid will go to XYZ for HS". XYZ is where they went to high school.
Jesuit grads with boys in first grade, say, "my son will go to Jesuit".
Mt. Carmel grads with girls in second grade, say, "of course my daughter will go to Mt. Carmel".
It's weird AF. if you are going to pay for it, why not let the kid choose where they want to go? My parents let me choose. My kids will be going to public school, but if they were going to go to private school, and the costs were similar, I'd let them choose which one they want to go to.
It's just weird.

Why is this weird?
If you went to a school and had a great experience, why is it weird to want your kids to go there?

Some baws never do any better than high school. So they want to make a tradition out of it. Let them baws do them and you do you.

Not only do I not have any kids, but I wouldn't even send me to the same school as me

In Louisiana, NOLA especially, where you went to HS is a big deal socially. If you want your kid in the right “club”, they have to be in the right school. That’s how you get them connections in town and the right mardi gras krewe and cotillions and what not. What private HS matters in NOLA. Some neighborhoods, businesses, fraternities, clubs, and krewes are primarily Jesuit, others are Brother Martin, etc. It matters.
I went to public school in Ascension, and people really do care which public hs you went to. That stuff continues to matter throughout your life, but not as much as the private hs stuff in NOLA. I wouldn’t mind my hypothetical kids going to the same hs as I did since they’d likely have a few of my and my brother’s friends as teachers, but then I’d have to move back to Sorrento. Yikes

Because 20-30 years later, it's not the same experience?
I mean if that's where the kid chooses, great. But this "there will be no choice" is weird.

I used to say my son would go to Jesuit until I moved to Dallas and realized Jesuit Dallas tuition is >$20k. frick that.
ETA: If we were back in Nola, Jesuit has the cheapest tuition of all Catholic high schools so it wouldn't be a tough decision. Plus legacies usually get accepted unless they are complete degenerates.

I'd send my kid to Central public schools if we still lived out there but it wasn't ever anything that was important to me.
The private school that I went to for most of my schooling is apparently the Redhawks rather than Rebels now. Ole Miss, you're next.

Nah, but that was my second choice.
My formative years were on the Avenue... where we got to have girls in our classes...
