My uncle, while in the ASAF stationed at McDilll, was hitch hiking back to Louisiana on leave on old IS 90 back in the late 60’s, was picked up by a guy in a Cadillac. The guy asked if he could drive and he said yes, so he let him drive. After about 6 hours he woke up and introduced himself as Red Adair and offered him a job when he got out of the service. I tell my kids that story, emphasizing how times have changed in such a short period of time.

He was dressed like 1950, half drunk and hollow eyed. He said, “It’s a long walk to Nashville, would you like a ride?”

Friend had a good Red story, he was on a nasty blowout in NE Texas for Exxon and this guy shows up to the location with sneakers on. The company man jumps his arse and asks him who the hell he thinks he is. He replies "I'm Red Adair and your boss in called me to put this MF out" baw left the scene like a bitch

Looks suspect. Wild Well Control was started by Joe Bowden and was a separate company. Why would their name be on Red Adair Co coveralls?

A friend of mine worked for them. This is apparently pretty rare because once a job was done they normally pulled off and burned their patches.

Wild well control is their signature offering. Not a company name.

Then that would date the coveralls to at the latest to the early 70s.

Most people don’t know that Myron Kinney was really the first one to put out well fires. Adair had his time in the sun, but most the stories are half legend and the success was due to Boots Hansen and Coots Mathews. The movie blew his ego up. By the end, Red couldn’t compete. He walked off jobs. He left next to nothing to his family. The company isn’t even around anymore.

He sold it 30 years ago when he retired. Not his fault it's not around.

I remember seeing him at the boat races at Buhlow Lake in the 70’s.Several red racing boats, red Cadillacs to pull trailers with the boats and equipment. All the crew were in red coveralls. He was pretty short, maybe 5’4”.I saw the movie with John Wayne,I was expecting a big hulking guy.

Guess I should have asked for his autograph.

I have a client who worked for Red Adair and he handled some marketing issues. He has a really badass Red Adair company jacket that he designed. I have been trying to score that jacket for the last fifteen years LOL.

His ego is absolutely why it’s not around today. Had Adair played his hand differently, Boots and Coots never would have left, Adair Co would have had a bigger role in Kuwait, and they would have the lion’s share of oilfield emergency response. Instead, Wild Well Control is the 800 lb gorilla and B&C was acquired by Halliburton and survives all but in name only.

In that industry niche, none of the pioneers managed to pass on any significant generational wealth. Arguably Joe Bowden did the best job of it since he had a job for a long time after Superior bought them.
