Which is not something I'd ever do anyway. Who can't cover the fare for their friends (if they're going to the same place/closeby) and let them take the next one or buy you a drink or something?

New Orleans cabs stink. Literally and figuratively. I've been here (used to live here) on business since last Friday and have gone through 5 cabs ... Not a single one had a working credit card machine ... Few spoke English ... All smelled ... I've used uber in other cities and it is time there was a decent alternative in New Orleans

Because it takes 5 seconds to split with a person.

Yeah, I catch cabs MUCH easier in New Orleans, but they're in much worse condition and have almost all foreign drivers.

Yeah but it is a nice touch. Especially in Houston where a ride could be $20 if you are traveling

Exactly. I just got back from a vacation where we used Uber all weekend. Tons of trips and we were all able to split the fare with a push of a button.
