Someone is full of shite...
I've never seen junk cars there, or overgrown weeds...
It was just open as a Spirit Halloween store in September and October. Matter of fact, the parking lot was just repainted with new parking spots..

Bowers should talk to the guy who owned the land the Elmwood Kmart occupied. That Kmart was just recently torn down.

Have you ever dealt with a filthy rich property owner?
The nola.com article implies that the landlord just wants the building back so he can re-lease it at a higher lease point. Maybe he has a potential tenant lined up?

Yes and yes.

Can't the parish step in at some point because of this?
Not because of the sales tax revenue. I think the only thing they could do is declare it a public nuisance and try to take possession of the property (this probably takes years). Otherwise, the fines are just going to lien against the building.

Veterans blvd used to have some cool places as a kid when I was growing up.
Toy Palace where the current Lazer Tag is next to the Chase, Funworks on David Dr., Lionells Playworld and the old OG Laser Tag where the current Walmart is...I can go on and on.
I think the oldest building that has withstood the test of time is that Buds Broiler by Kia.

Yup, Children's Place... cool place... then became CompUSA

Funworks on David Dr.,
Spent so much time here as a kid. Parties, summer afternoons, etc. They had that net wall that you could climb to the second story, the huge tube tunnel along the ceiling, the hurricane wind room, etc...

Yup by the Winn Dixie

That one and the two story strip center where Casa Garcia is. Oh and of course Chappelle.

The entire lot is paved. Not sure of these ‘weeds’ they’re talking about.
And ‘abandoned cars in the parking lot’/ nope, never seen any of these either.

No way, Dorignac's and the Lamp Lighter Lounge...
Actually, That Bud's use to be a Roy Roger's originally...

Why is Transformco still paying rent of 1M/ year?
Do they have any type of long term plans?
That the guy wants to kick them out to get a higher rent, and they are cool paying rent while trying to sublease it seems to indicate they are each in agreement that there is money to be made above the current pricing

I think both former Kmarts on the Westbank are vacant. Not sure about the one near Belle Chasse, but, the one in Marrero sat empty for close to 2 decades - before briefly being an asian grocery - and is now sitting empty again. Meanwhile, Rouses built a brand new grocery across the street and business is booming.
As far as getting it demolished, maybe bring a building inspector inside and play the "catch all the code violations" game. Kmart wasn't known for updating many of their stores past the 1980's.

Looks like it took a whallop from Ida.
whatever happened to the one by the train tracks near Delgado?

Question (since there is no link)-- is the article referring to the former KMart between between Bonnabel and Causeway, or the one down by David Drive (the old GEX)?
Both are in Metairie (the one by David Drive is definitely not in Kenner). With the neighborhood behind that one by David Drive, I could see more issues with abandoned cars and weeds at that spot....
But yeah, the one between Rouses and Perino's looks to me to be in good shape.

It's the one between Causeway and Bonnabel.
Remember this is the same neighborhood where the locals pitched an absolute fit when the shopping center with Trader Joe's was built.
This also isn't too far from Big Lee's place (RIP)

The lease doesn’t have use and upkeep contingencies?
I was thinking the same thing.
Lease should have written to have minimum annual rent and an escalator based on sales revenue and inflation.
Another clause should have been added to say a business must operate and generate revenue otherwise lease can be terminated.
I guess when it opened they thought that Kmart was a steady business and be located there forever like a bank or a church.

There was an abandoned Stuckey's outside of Livonia that wsa vacant for at least 20 years before somebody tore it down or burned it down. When we'd drive by there on the way back from LSU games the light was always on in the parking lot. Somebody at Corporate was faithfully paying the electric bill each month. Big companies have an inertia that's nearly the equal of big government.

it is in a pretty damn prime location ... but that's just it
those big box warehouse parcels have fewer and fewer possible anchor tenants like the old days
I mean remember Sears used to be BALLING in real estate at one time, like absolutely absurd
Now you hope Amazon or Wal-Mart likes it for a distribution center
