Furthermore, being overpaid isn't the discussion that is happening here. We're talking about the nepotism and lack of competition.
well, the OP is about river boat cousins wanting a pay raise, to be fair. Which is actually kind of funny considering their greed is seemingly exposing the nepotism.
Half of this thread probably didn't know how much they made, or how they were hired before clicking on that article.

No one is stopping anyone from going to maritime school, working towards a pilot license, and applying to any of the pilot associations in your area.
The stigma that you can only be family makes the qualifying pool pretty small from the get go.

Unfortunately you just probably can't become a pilot in Louisiana. Doesn't mean being a pilot is unattainable
It just means Louisiana is dead last in yet another category where corruption inhibits progress.

SFP kept quoting an article from a series of articles dating back to 2001. I think it's fair to say this has been around for 17 years.

That's pretty much exactly what happened. Went to the supreme court and they basically sanctioned nepotism in their hiring practices.
In 1947. Methinks it needs to be revisited.

I wanna see a River Pilot use this logic when selecting a Pediatrician. You can't go find the BEST pediatrician in Greater New Orleans. You have to go find one related to the Pediatrician you had as a child b/c that pediatrician knows your family and probably told his son/niece/nephew all about your family's medical history.
So it's not a problem that he's only 33 yrs old and a Resident. His daddy told him everything he needed to know about your kid's body.
How fricking stupid does that sound?

when 41 of 44 selected pilots in 10 years were related, can you really say this with a straight face?

I mean...come on. 41 of 44. You can't tell me 93% of maritime students are related.

Was told to frick off in the 60s as well.

I was referring to the OP article. Which I have no idea when it was written.

The companies contracting aren't bitching about the service of the river pilots, they're only bitching about having to pay more.

how many applied total?

These have nothing to do with each other. You dont go to maritime school just to become a pilot. Plenty go with zero aspirations of becoming a pilot.
Go talk to people that work in the industry. Many dont want the job and/or the responsibilities that come with it. Some would rather go sit on a drill ship half the year, make 150-200k, and sit in front of a computer and play on TD all day.

Ok, I'll rephrase. I have a hard time believe 93% of applicants in 10 years were related.

Exactly. Not applying for a job is the best way I know if to not get a job. But then bitching about not getting the job you didn't apply for is suddenly neopotism.
Posted on 4/3/18 at 1:39 pm to ThatMakesSense
So now the explanation is that 93% of applicants over a 10 year period were related? I don't have the stats; maybe you do. But I'm not buying that reasoning. It smells like bull-fricking-shite.

Longshoremen unions in some areas are like this. In Washington, they'll pull up to the dock with t shirts and cargo shorts in their 80K trucks, three to a line, do 45 min of work, leave and get paid a days wages. You pretty much have to be born into it.
Union and government cronyism.

You can't explain the nuances of the maritime industry to people that think a harbor pilot and a shrimp boat captain have the the same responsibilities and training

Pediatricians without specialization don't make 475k a year.
Yall's heyday is done. The OT is fed up and we are gonna change shite TO-DAY!

No one is trying to understand the nuances. It's obvious the main discussion is simple- there is too much nepotism in this industry, in Louisiana. That's all.
