On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial Earth satellite, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Kazakh SSR. This event, occurring at 19:28:34 UTC, marked the official beginning of the Space Age and the Cold War space race between the USSR and the United States.

I remember my grandfather bringing me outside to see the Russian Sputnik crossing the nighttime sky.
He was very concerned of what that meant and how the US was behind Russia.
