July 2, 1776. John Hancock puts Virginia's motion for independence up to the assembly for a final vote. 12 states voted yay, 0 voted nay, and 1 (New York) abstained.

The autobiography of John Adams has a great breakdown on the events that led up to July 2nd (the one by David McCullough). It's pretty fascinating.
