I have had no dipstick on my daily drivers for 16 years and my wife's daily for about 1/2 that. They both give a bar graph that shows a min/max level similar to the hash marks on a dipstick. Her car shows min/max delta at 1 liter over the bar graph mine shows min/max at 1.6 liters over the graph and has 4 hash marks. Pretty easy to use linear interpolation to be pretty accurate on how much to add.

Ours have all been very accurate.

Note: most modern cars (post 2000) have an electronic oil level sensor system. They will display a yellow oil can idiot light when it gets to a predetermined level, usually a couple of quarts low and if the oil pressure drops significantly (sucking air, failed pump, blown-off oil filter, etc), it will display a red idiot light.

I understand wanting a dipstick, but I am perfectly comfortable without one now. Almost as comfortable as I am with the gas gauge or any of the other gauges on my dash. I have been relying on them for 44 years of driving. Frankly, I think very few drivers check their oil on any regular basis and the ability to check it from the dash probably increases the odds they will but only by a small percentage.



As for people arguing that simple vehicles with low price tags will sell like hotcakes, I don't see it. Go out and look at how few cars get sold in poverty spec, and that will give you an idea of how much demand there is for simple cars with limited bells and whistles. Manufacturers and dealers do prefer not to sell them, but if people were beating down dealer doors to buy them they would build them.
