The LORD thy God commanded to be placed on the Ark of the Covenant:

"Make two cherubim from hammered gold, and place them on the two ends of the atonement cover."

Also, the LORD thy God commanded:

"Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live."

THE QUESTION IS: Did the LORD thy God command the making of Graven Images? Two Cherubim statues made of gold to be placed on the Ark of the Covenant? Maybe the Holiest of all Holy things? Aren't the two Golden Cherubim statues awfully like a graven image statue of Jesus outside that Baptist Church?

What about the metal snake statue? That might seem like a statue, or, Graven Image.

The creator of the universe likes shiny things, can you blame him?

I like religious statues and I happen to be of the opinion that two statues made of pure gold of two Cherubim would look very, very nice in a church somewhere, ESPECIALLY if we could find the Ark of the Covenant and display it also.

The LORD they God commanded that these be made, so, I have my doubts that the statue of Jesus in a Baptist church or in any church is a Graven Image.

Next you'll point out that only Christians think Christianity is monotheistic.

One topic per thread, please.

Is a Jesus statue a Graven Image of Idolatry or not?

If it is, what about the Golden Cherubim statues?

Yes. The difference is that the Israelites were commanded not to create AND worship graven images. The creating was not strictly prohibited. Related to the first commandment to have no other gods before Him.

It was indeed the Holiest of Holies and houses God’s presence at that time. The Cherubim were not objects of worship, rather the presence of God between them was. Worshipping Ángels and seeing them as gods is sinful, and is partly what caused the fall of Lucifer.

next reference we find in the Bible to this serpent is in John 3:14. Jesus indicated that this bronze serpent was a foreshadowing of Him. The serpent, a symbol of sin and judgment, was lifted up from the earth and put on a tree, which was a symbol of a curse (Galatians 3:13). The serpent lifted up and cursed symbolized Jesus, who takes away sin from everyone who would look to Him in faith, just like the Israelites had to look to the upraised symbol in the wilderness.

He said not to make any graven images of God, nor of other Gods to be worshiped. He didn't ban his followers from carving anything. That would be idiotic.

What made the Hebrew God different from all of the other Gods of the ancient world was that he did not have a corporeal body. He was not a physical being like Anubis or the Dragon Baal. God did not wish to be an image, but rather a concept, and thus banned his followers from making images depicting God or of depicting other Gods to be worshiped.

Is it OK to have the statue of Jesus in front of or in the Baptist church or is that a Graven Image forbidden by the LORD thy God?

If not, then, I suppose that a statue of a Cherubim or Serpent would be OK?

So, as long as I don't worship the statue itself, the statue is not a Graven Image in the eyes of the LORD thy God?

That makes sense to me.

I have no plans to worship any statue, so, I think I'll be OK and I no longer feel threatened by any religious statues. Thanks. I was worried that a religious statue might cause me to be CONDEMNED TO ETERNAL DAMNATION for violating one of the Ten Commandments.

Whew. I dodged a bullet there. Paw Paw and Maw Maw have a religious statue in their home and I was planning to smash it to bits with a sledgehammer until I read your post. Thanks.

PS Paw Paw and Maw Maw are going to Hell but I'm glad that it's not because of the religious statue. They are going to Hell because they host sex orgies in their home.

That is a legitimate issue of debate among different denominations. Some argue the prohibition only applies to The Father, thus Jesus and the Holy Spirit (typically represented by a flame or a dove) are ok to be depicted.

Some sects see depicting Jesus as ok, but depicting Mary, the disciples, and the other Saints in statues as violating that prohibition.

In no case would those be prohibited if done so in the manner used in the Bible. The Serpent was not carved to be worshiped. It was simple a symbol God commanded Moses to use. God was not a serpent nor did Moses say he was such. It was just a cool stick which God gave magical powers to.

The same is true for the cheribum. They are not God. They may be instruments of God, but they are not divinity to be worshiped in and of themselves. Once again, God commanded those adornments be made.

I hope others chime in here because my opinion is beginning to form around the idea that religious statues are OK so long as you don't create them in order to worship them instead of worship of the LORD thy God.

This is a legitimate spiritual question.

The moderator who Anchored this thread is really out of line here because this is a legit spiritual question.

Mod -- if you don't like me, that's fine, but, just know that you don't like me for my ideas and my speech, and you should not be a Mod if you are that petty.

With all of the really crappy threads that are on the OT daily, you Anchor a legit thread like this? You should not be a Moderator.

You are going to see this thread again after you are off duty, Moderator. You don't beat me that easily.

That's mostly correct, but they should also not be made or used if they will make other people stumble/be tempted to idolize. It's not necessarily sinful, but it would be best for people to avoid angel statues, etc. There has been far too much angel worship. It is far better to be a Christian and child of Yahuah (God Almighty) than it is to be an angel. I don't know about this Jesus statue you refer to. Reminders of Christ are good, but people need to focus on his sacrifice and be careful not to worship the cross instead of Christ.

Graven images aren't the main concern for worshiping false idols these days. Obviously sports, drugs, celebrities, etc have replaced graven images.
