People who didn't grow up in brokedown "diverse" towns and cities probably still don't realize this, but there were large swaths of the population that would go years or even decades without writing out or typing out anything, aside from the occasional name and date. A complete sentence was out of the question. The only reading prior to social media was the scroll on cable television, the front of the boxes at the grocery store or a fast food menu.
Social media has improved that dramatically. The writing skills on the podunk Facebook Crime page in my hometown has improved night and day in the last 7 or 8 years. It's still definitely pretty shitty, and it always will be, but it's exponentially better than it was. Now about 90-95 percent of the posts are interpretable as opposed to 30-35 percent as a fledgling.
After a while there's a certain peer pressure not to write like a complete short bus rider on public forums or large local online spaces like hometown crime pages on Facebook.
PersonallyI welcome our new overlord Social Media!

People are steadily becoming dumber. ACT/SAT scores have gone down on average several year in a row

Dude, peer pressure to act like you graduated from 7th grade? LOL. We get that here, but even when I'm pinging 40+ year olds on dating apps, half the time I have no idea what they're talking about. Don't get me started on emojis.

What is going on here?
The premise of the OP is legit, even if debatable but y’all fragging OP.
