I’m not a fan of the song, but the kid who wrote it is pretty great, well at least that’s what it appears. His twitter feed has 0 negativity and it is filled with him wanting to help make things better. I think he is genuinely a decent kid, so I’m really happy he has capitalized off of his 15 minutes.

Maybe I’m wrong. Google it.

Who is that?
What are they singing?
Never mind. I actually don't care.

The kids seem to love it. Why is this a big deal?

Kudos for the effort, I won't even try to tear down something created out of honesty.
I laughed when I read the first quatrain because I didn't even get that Vietnam rhymed with nail salon.
I heard it in a twangy country on top a single acoustic like something that would have been in a third chapter of Full Metal Jacket when they got stateside.
It does put a spotlight on what Old Town Road does so well and that is the hook. The thing that makes a song an earwig across genres is that hook in the chorus that just keeps boring into your brain even when you don't want it to.

It wasn’t even effort really. It was a fun story that just flowed and then I got silly with it.
And the hook is where it’s at. Old town road does it brilliantly because it’s so accessible. It taps into that older country sound, that head Bobbing beat that could literally be any genre.
It’s simple and inelegant and doesn’t even make sense but it works. Primarily because it doesn’t try to be anything.
It has no soul or syncope but entices nonetheless
