Anyone here seen them? Are they as beautiful and bright in real life as they are in pictures? Where did you go to see them?

I have seen them. They vary, depending on conditions, but they are pretty awesome. You can see them as far South as our family's place on the Boundary Waters in MN/ON.

same. but, from what i've read there's no real way to predict when they'll show up. makes planning a trip kind of tough.

Here is a great website that shows forecasts and even a map that shows you how far south you can see them based on the strength of the lights at any given time...

I lived in Fairbanks for 6 years, they really are cool to see. I never got tired of going out to a dark spot to view them, especially when they are really active with multiple colors.

I have an Alaska State Trooper friend that is always posing amazing pics. One of his rewards for living in North Pole, AK.

I'm trying to go to Iceland in March to see this. Iceland is relatively cheap right now but it is becoming more of a tourist destination if interested.
