The Mulatto Axe Murders

I've lived most of my life in Louisiana, albeit NWLA, and somehow I had never heard of this until a podcast yesterday.
In a 15 month span in 1911-1912, someone was sneaking into houses in South Central La, Southwest La and Southeast Texas and taking out entire families with an axe. His final death toll was 49.
Is this a thing in South La that is widely known? I am very curious as to how I've never heard of it.
Suspect was never caught.

Well, in the article it states that the victims were black, mulatto and white.
But I guess The MULATTO...and also black...and some white people too...AXE MURDERS
Makes for a wordy headline.
I prefer to think the axe was made from a cross between a black walnut and a white oak.

Different. The New Orleans thing was a few years later.
The events in the OP never went east of Lafayette from what I can tell. Looks like the guy was using the rail line on what is now the I-10 corridor.
