It's very good if alternative history fiction is your thing. I enjoyed the first episode of the show as well.

It is an excellent book. I'm a big fan of the novels of Phillip K. Dick this one is certainly one of the best. It will probably not reveal much about the show though, so you would be safe reading it before or after seeing the series.

It does read a little dated, now, but the novel itself diverges wildly from the pilot (I haven't watched the second episode myself). They are 2 different experiences.
The novel, itself, focuses on themes of genuineness and artificiality and how they are interrelated. It also hits on race issues (and this was way back then, baw)/prejudice in the context of a defeated U.S. after a WWII in which the Allies lost.

Yes, definitely read the book. That one was one of the few I actually enjoyed reading while @ school.
