In 480 BC, the Persians were invading Greece. The Greeks put aside all differences to survive the invasion and actually worked together really well. This included recalling banished politicians.

One of those politicians was Xanthippus. He returned to Athens but was immediately ordered to go to the island of Salamis.

Unbeknownst to him, his dog started following him. Xanthippus boarded a trireme and the dog jumped in the ocean after him and followed the ship. The dog swam at least one mile in open ocean. The dog made it to the beach of salamis where it reunified with its master once again before dying of exhaustion.

The dog was honored for centuries and we shouldn’t forget about it in modern times.

Romans had the Supplicia Canum where the dogs were crucified annually and the Geese were honored since the formers ancestors failed to bark when the Gauls were sneaking up during the siege of Rome, and the latter warned the Romans of the assault.

Geese were dressed in purple and gold by the way.

Dogs are a gift to anybody who is wise enough to appreciate them. Last week I walked 35 miles with my dog. She never whines or complains and she’s always ready to roll. Loyalty is only 1 of so many great canine traits.

I have very little good to say about ancient Rome. Very overrated as an empire.

How can an ‘empire’ be overrated? It is a Proper Noun.

Depends on where the ship left from. Salamis is a mile off the Atica coast, but 30 miles from Athens. I tend to think there was an evacuation point close to Salamis. There are wide reports of the evacuation of dogs constantly howling from loneliness
