Maybe the most important commercial jet of all time:

End of an Era: final 747 rolls off assembly line

quote:

The 747 was once the premiere choice of aircraft for airlines and has since been replaced with a twin-engine, wide-body aircraft that is more fuel-efficient. Still, 341 of these jumbos are in use but only as freighters.

"The 747-8 is an incredibly capable aircraft, with capacity that is unmatched by any other freighter in production," UPS wrote in a statement in 2020 when Boeing said production of the jet would end in late 2022.

"With a maximum payload of 307,000 lbs., we use them on long, high-volume routes, connecting Asia, North America, Europe and the Middle East," the shipper continued.

?The last 747 was sold to air freighter Atlas Air which will use the aircraft to haul goods worldwide.

This is a jet that has been in production for over 50 years. That's pretty damned impressive.

I first flew on a Seven Four from Seoul to San Diego, when my hitch was up in the Navy, many moons ago. Maybe the most iconic passenger jet ever produced.

Queen of the skies

The 747 book by Joe Sutter is a must-read IMO

A half century.
And arguably air travel is no better today than it was when the first 747 hit the skies.

As an Av Geek, I’m really sad I may never experience flying on a 747. Most of my international travel has been 777.

I did get 3 legs on an A380 though on my honeymoon which was awesome (give it’s uncertain future). Business class Emirates on the A380 was awesome with the bar in the back — was reminiscent of the golden era of air travel.

It’s infinitely worse than in 1968 when I believe the first 747 was built for commercial use.

Damned impressive is right. A real piece of American ingenuity. Especially in the age of twin engined Airliners.

A design 36 years older than the only jet that came close to succeeding it and was produced for another 3 years after its competitor's production line was shut down(the A380).

And I'm an Airbus guy.

Hope Boeing pulls their shite together and becomes the company they once were.

I'd argue that it's much, much worse. The travel experience... food, quality of care of passengers, seat room, etc.... were all better. But that's because flying was an expense luxury. The downside of deregulation was that it turned flying from an experience into bus lines of the sky, with the same kinds of passengers. And we've gotten to the point where the squeeze, the hassle, and the security is such that those $99 dollar fares aren't' worth it anymore.

Did it once Shanghai to Chicago. Made sure I did the upstairs business class.

Managed to get one flight on the 747 in all my time flying.

British Airways 747-400 from Heathrow to JFK.

Still a few that are going to be flying for a little while longer with Lufthansa, Korean and Air China, but realistically my best bet at another one is on LH

Deregualation was long before I was born, so I obviously never experienced that type of air travel. However, I was born into a household that wouldn't have been able to afford it anyway. And that's the upside. For better or worse, deregulation made air travel much more accessible to the average American.

I wish people treated it as the luxury it is, but constantly find myself shaking my head at the number of people wearing pajama pants on airline flights.

A major part of the reason I don't have more 747's in my flight log. DL wasn't flying them when I was traveling a bunch with my dad as a kid, and once they got some in the merger with Northwest, I was in high school/college so no jetting off to Asia.

Can't tell you how many L1011's I've flown on though

Never had the pleasure. One of my favorite airliners. Lockheed didn't build many good airliners, but that was one of them.

I'm from Monroe and a Delta history geek.

If you haven't already done it and you get the chance, go check out the museum in Atlanta. The 747 display is awesome.

What's the difference between your mom and a 747?

You can't fit as many men in a 747.

Only flew on a 747 twice: my first trip to Europe via KLM from ATL to AMS and my first trip to Hawaii via United from SFO to HNL. I was in HS and college for those flights so I flew in steerage, I kinda regret never flying 1st class in one of them.

I get people lamenting the loss of formality in flying today but it just doesn't have the luxury price tag it once did. I think we are all better for it and you can generally buy much more luxurious accommodations for long flights if you are willing to pay old-school prices. I used to dress to fly but now I am in shorts and a T-shirt unless it is going to be cold when I touch down then it is jeans and a sweater. There is nothing worse than being stuck on a plane with A/C issues wearing a suit.

It's always a sad day when the last production number rolls out, but the Queen's last day was still considerably longer than her two competitors back in the early years.

I’m from Shreveport and got to fly “through” Monroe many times on the way to Atlanta as a kid when Delta was running MD-80’s and 727s through there.

Still haven’t made it out to the museum in Atlanta yet, but there is a group on FlyerTalk that goes for Hops in the Hangar each year
