older guys, has it always been a thing that you gotta replace the battery when the alternator goes out?

This is a thing? I've never done that, nor will I ever do that. Diesels take two batteries, frick hat nonsense.

its so infuriating to have to spend $200-$400 to replace the whole alternator

You can buy a rebuilt one with a warranty for about half of this

Back in the day there was a grease fitting on the water pump to keep the bearings lubed. You almost never had a water pump go bad.

same thing for the AC compressor clutch

In my case, the clutch went bad but the rest of the compressor was still working. Since I was at 200k miles, it made sense for me to replace the entire thing since the system needed to be opened up anyway and not have to have the cost of that labor again if the compressor went out later.

When my alternator went out it whined like a banshee then made a grinding noise. I think it was legitimately kaput.

I had:

Bad battery
Bad alternator
Bad reman alternator
Gauge cluster pulling current when truck was off
Speaker amp pulling current when truck was off

Was a huge PITA to figure out, but a decent multimeter and some money was all it took

Eta: The constant draw-downs caused the battery to go bad. The constant charging of a completely dead battery caused the alternator to go bad

not really, but its fairly common for battery go bad as a result of a fricked up alternator

the average person doesnt investigate why the battery is dead they just replace it, then they have more issues and actually check the alternator and then find out its bad
