The first American flag to fly over the conquered island of Okinawa in May 1945

Eugene Sledge's With the Old Breed stated the first American flag to fly over the conquered Japanese fortress at Shuri Castle during the World War II battle of Okinawa was the Confederate battle flag. Sledge, who was present, wrote:
"Earlier in the morning [of May 29, 1945]. . . Marines had attacked eastward into the rains of Shuri Castle and had raised the Confederate flag. When we learned that the flag of the Confederacy had been hoisted over the very heart and soul of Japanese resistance, all of us Southerners cheered loudly. The Yankees among us grumbled."
Those from the southern states were happy and yelled the battle cry of the rebels. There was also a sarcastic comment from a marine from a northern state who said: "Now we have to sing Dixie?" The Confederate flag was replaced by the Stars and Stripes.
Lt. General Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr. - the son of the Confederate general who surrendered Fort Donelson to Ulysses S. Grant - ordered the flag taken down and replaced by Old Glory. General Buckner would be killed by Japanese mortar fire three weeks later.

That’s a beautiful flag

I don't get it. Why would they fly a traitor's flag over such an important American victory?

Maybe because they finally won one to get back to .500?

No comment on the flag.... but lived on Okinawa when I was in first and second grade.
May dad was stationed there for a few years during Vietnam war. Boy ... what an adventure that island was for a kid with no real life worries yet. Lot of leftover stuff laying around on the beaches and caves from the battle. Just had to know not to kick over cans and pick up intact bombs. Had a neighbor bring a bomb back from the beach and drop it in his moms kitchen. Next thing we know the MPs clear us all out of the neighborhood till bomb squad came. NCOs lived off base...

Did those poor soldiers have a safe place to go when that flag was hoisted?
