I love how they also have a show called "Youtubers React".

The hypocritical thing is they are using other people's content to make some of their videos and not paying for the content they use. They have videos like "kids react to Pewdepie" and use his videos under fair use to make their videos yet they want to be greedy and try to get around fair use rights by claiming every react video on Youtube.

BTW, they didn't even create that format. There was another guy doing it way before them and the Fine Bros got his channel shut down AFTER they started doing their series. It was all over Reddit. They basically stole his format then pursued him legally using a few other copyrights they have secured.

It's so ridiculous because this format has been around since the formation of the media. What do you think the news does? Goes out and gets people's reactions for ratings. Siskel and Ebert utilized this format to talk about movies. Every late night and radio show depend on reactions from news stories, movies, and TV shows from their viewers. Beavis and Butthead and Mystery Science Theater 3000 perfected reaction videos to mass media.

What they've done is so uncreative and not all that fun really. They're the Jay Leno of YouTubers. The diversity in their reaction videos is so fricking vague that if they were able to get away with this they could have sued just about every portion of media. So would Conan have to pay these guys a fine for doing a "Clueless Gamer" segment? How about interviewing people on the street about their opinion on what a pop star did? They are so fricking delusional that they think they developed this concept and perfected it, when really they just managed to create crappy popcorn and demand that anyone who sells snacks should pay them royalties.

They need to come out and flat out apologize before they lose a few more million subs. Once this hits mainstream and Kimmel or Fallon hit them, they are going to really feel it.

There's also the repercussions of people now retroactively going back and disliking all their videos. So by the end of all this they will have heaps of dislikes and that's going to cripple their entire model.

I think it will be a very interesting process to watch for those in the YT community.. I personally tend to think they'll end up on the plus side of this. The reason why? I know people that have met their favorite YT celebrities and then were REALLY let down with them after they met them, but still watch their shows. So, if you have a dominant product, people still enjoy being entertained by it. At the end of the day, it's not like they're burning kittens in fires.

If they just lay low, maybe poke some fun at themselves without drawing much more drama around it, I think they'll survive. Who knows, tho? I'm very interested to see what happens in the long run.

They have over 40 employees and word is the revenue from their videos isn't enough to sustain that. They only way to do so is they have a lot of sponsors and they make a lot of sponsored videos. If they start losing sponsors over this they will have to start firing people and may not recover to the point where they are now but could still have a profitable channel.

You can cut back employees and scale back. Look at RWJ. He had a ton of stuff going for him, and then wasn't a bitch to Maker and kept his junk going.

These youtubers mostly GOT to where they are because they know how to do every element that goes on with their channels, even if not as well as the person they hired. I'm sure it's gonna give them a major bottom line hit, but I'd wager they can ultimately recover.

Yeah sponsored videos is where the big money comes from, but if they absorb the mass exodus and start back to growing their sub base again, the sponsors will be right back into the fray.

Cripes tho.. i didn't know they had THAT big of a staff.

I'm sure Kimmel is already putting together a skit where he gets some other famous Youtubers, have them react to their video, and then just taunt them by using their exact same format and background. Make no mistake, the Late Night hosts are big Youtubers, and they're not going to let attempted extortion of just about everyone in mass media go without a exorbitant amount of ridicule. I don't think they have any idea what they've wrought.

It really could spell the end for their channel, since they will almost certainly be the single most unpopular people on YouTube after all this is said and done. Haven't seen anything close to this since Harry Knowles tried to ask his fans to give him half a million dollars to finance his garbage show, but even he didn't try to steal money from the entire internet.

I'm torn:

Huge fan of react videos, but not a fan of all of this. Not sure if I should unfollow to prove a point(as small as it may be), or if I should see what they do next.

Watching that live subscriber counter makes me though. Holy shite they're losing subscribers quick. Almost wondered if it could even be real at first.

I'll guess they will lose 6,000,000 subscribers. But who knows.

Hello,
We’re here to apologize.
We realize we built a system that could easily be used for wrong. We are fixing that. The reality that trademarks like these could be used to theoretically give companies (including ours) the power to police and control online video is a valid concern, and though we can assert our intentions are pure, there’s no way to prove them.
We have decided to do the following:
1. Rescind all of our “React” trademarks and applications.*
2. Discontinue the React World program.
3. Release all past Content ID claims.**
The concerns people have about React World are understandable, and that people see a link between that and our past video takedowns, but those were mistakes from an earlier time. It makes perfect sense for people to distrust our motives here, but we are confident that our actions will speak louder than these words moving forward.
This has been a hard week. Our plan is to keep making great content with the help of our amazing staff. Thank you for your time and for hearing us out.
Sincerely,
Benny and Rafi Fine

That's great and all but for them, the damage is done. Will they recover? Yes because there are still millions of people that watch them that have no idea this went on and others that don't care, but this still cost them a lot from all angles.

Absolute half hearted apology. They finally realized they weren't going to get away with this, and that they're going to lose millions of subscribers as a result of this. I bet all the late night programs are going to rip them a new a-hole tonight. They tried to take over YouTube and failed miserably at it.

Just switched on Conan to see what he has to say about it.

followers before and after(~10%?)

and trust me, move is calculated and supported.

Youtube: Hey we are getting flack
Fine: yeah, us too
Youtube: just say that it's all over and we'll give you 25% more in kickbacks
Fine: Sweet, where do we sign?
Youtube; great, now they can move on to something else.

No Youtube doesn't care about that shite and that's part of the issue is that they allow the content ID system to be abused by greedy fricks like the fine bros. Youtube in no way gave or made them change their minds though. Youtube knows that when one channel falls another will take it's spot and their revenue will stay the same.

Not to mention their content is total garbage. It's not funny and is the least creative thing on YouTube. They merely record people looking at or playing with something, and that's it. Nothing creative done with the concept whatsoever. They are totally reliant on everyone else instead of their own creativity, and obviously planned on taking that a step further and stealing work from people who actually are creative. At least most reaction videos are people recording themselves and trying to put forth an interesting perspective, even if they fail.

And they are such pretentious douchebags as well. They literally think they've changed the world with their reaction videos, to where I find it laughable to suggest they've really changed a single person's life with their videos. Do people really think about their videos and how it challenges their perspectives? Have their been any national policy changes thanks to their videos? Do people spout off what they heard from the videos or actually come off with a new perspective on how to view the world? I'm willing to bet almost everyone who watches their videos forget about it within 10 minutes. They haven't done shite to change another person's views. These videos make Leno's Jaywalking look like comedic masterpieces.
