Please visit Battle for the Net and fight for net neutrality.

quote:

We depend on Net Neutrality to keep the Internet the free and open marketplace of ideas. Ending Net Neutrality may lead to: Tiered internet structure which can make Internet very expensive for web users. Users who consume lots of data (Netflix, Youtube, video games, etc.) are especially at risk for massive price spikes. Monopolies. ISPs could also decide to create their own websites to compete with any existing website like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, then put their competition in a more expensive internet package, pricing them out of the market, causing them to shrivel up and be replaced by your ISP brand version of [insert site]. Stifled innovation. Even if the ISP aren't trying to directly compete, tiered internet can stifle innovative new upstart websites who can't afford to pay the ISP the premium to be included in an affordable tier of Internet. This will severely limit their visibility and ability to gain traction. Censorship. ISPs can censor anything that they disagree with for any reason. Like this very post! And boy they have tried! Ending net neutrality will make their censorship process instantaneous and without recourse. Political oppression. Government may be able to have content taken down (or more stealthily priced out of the market) for political reasons indirectly, using the ISP's own 'free will' as a proxy. Meaning it gets to completely subvert the First Amendment free speech protection. The ubiquity of crony capitalism, the situation that has long existed where there is a close relationship between business (lobbyists) and government makes this a very real possibility without network neutrality to protect us. These are only some of the foreseeable reasons we should fight for net neutrality. YouTuber TotalBiscuit explains the situation (YT: Net Neutrality explained and why it matters.) If you are not in the US you can help by spreading this info and raising awareness, especially among your US friends.

FCC is voting today and the internet chooses today as the "day of action"

The vote will probably be over before anyone realizes what pornhub or Amazon is doing. Seems late to me.

if you don't want corporations to control what websites you can visit, and what content is available for your viewing, I encourage you to click the OPs link.

not to mention the speed of internet available on certain websites, designed to push you to others.

I agree with the concept of an open internet not controlled by the cable companies. However, privacy concerns with net neutrality in this current form, as well as the Pandora's box of government intervention, make me very weary of this as well.

the fight for net neutrality is way under represented in the news and I hate that many people have no idea the importance of this

I'm asking a question.

I know they didn't start fighting for this today or even last week. It has been going on forever.

Also, the vote isn't today or even this week. The only thing that is close to happening (and it isn't today) is the end of the public commentary period, after which internal deliberations start.

You feel stoking the public interest would have been more useful a month ago?

Also, this link is plastered all over some of these companies' websites. People won't have to figure it out....

I dont know how long it will take before ISP's will start selling premium internet, or slowing internet speeds to your favorite sites, ahem, tigerdroppings, if you dont pay them, but if they win it is only a matter of time.

Ah, so the OP has bad info in the post.

I've seen 100 Amazon Prime Day commercials in the last week. Seems Amazon missed a Prime opportunity by not adding additional "net neutrality" charges or snippets to their commercials.
