Yes. There is definitely the aspect of self defense. But it’s a tough sell.
Technically, they just have to believe that Disney would have dropped Depp for something they believe he has actually done. They don’t have to believe everything Heard says.
So it’s a tough case, but again, this is more about salvaging his career from here on out. Even if it’s a little bit.

This lawyer can't figure out how to ask a question without an objection so she just says Amber tells us your emotions, and here we go

quote:Right. And they don’t have to believe everything she says to say Depp does not have a defamation case. Does that make sense?
Problem for Heard is that being seen as a compulsive liar makes it very hard to believe a word out of her mouth.
But, making her look like a lier definitely helps his career.

at this point... I think everyone knows this case isn't about the actual judgment but rather the court of public opinion... a no decision in either party's favor is still a win for Depp
OH shite... ELAINE HAS NO FURTHER QUESTIONS
CROSS TIME BABY (after break... 2:25 PM CDT)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, this was pretty much my original question. The burden appears to be so heavily favored against the plaintiff in a defamation suit, it seems almost impossible to win in court.
If that is the case, it seems the trial has little to do with a court verdict, and everything to do with each party trying to walk out with something salvageable. An acting career in Depp's case or becoming at least somewhat publicly relevant again in Heard's case.

should be back from break here shortly... and with cross beginning... this should get fun

quote:Yes. That is why this is happening. Depp is saying “Hey, you need to understand that we had some issues in our relationship, but she has gone completely off the rails with her claims. And she was abusive to me on more than one occasion.” Proving this helps him and his career immensely. And he’s fine that.

Depp is also saying that he was not physically abusive. No matter what you believe in that aspect, it’s absolutely not been proven definitively. So that again helps Depp’s career.
This is his answer to her accusations. Instead of doing an interview or book, he chose this route. Because it’s all under oath. It’s evidence. They even talked about it in their recorded phone conversation. And I think it’s a great idea and been very successful.

Makes total sense, thanks.
So, then that begs the question WHY in the hell would Heard's PR team/agent let the most whiny, unlikable attorney in recent TV memory trot herself out as the face of the defense??

the best legal tactic... esp. in gender-based violence cases... is to let a female lawyer question a female (alleged) victim... both for direct & cross
ETA: now why this particular female lawyer... no idea

ahhh... Rekieta just explained the extensive sidebar
this is Camille telling the judge 'this is what we think she opened the door to and we plan on attacking it' and Elaine saying 'uhhhhhhhhh... I don't think we opened that door on direct... Judge you already said this can't come in and we don't think the door was opened to let it in"

They’re reading our board

going right to the fact that Depp wears rings... rings that would leave serious marks if he hit her
Posted on 5/16/22 at 2:55 pm to rt3
And she didn’t see it coming. Walked into it.
Posted on 5/16/22 at 2:55 pm to rt3
now Amber can't remember which time in March 2013 she previously testified to
Posted on 5/16/22 at 2:56 pm to rt3
no injuries to the face after he allegedly hit her several times in the face with big rings
and she didn't go seek medical help from said beating too
