I have no doubt that masks help prevent the spread of the virus if the wearer is spewing phlegm. That's just common courtesy. I can't recall one instance since this thing started when I've been out in public and saw someone hacking/sneezing.

I can even see wanting to wear a mask if I know in advance I'm going to be stuck within 6 feet of a hacker/sneezer or packed in somewhere nut to butt with a bunch of strangers for an extended period of time.

For the other 99.9% of everyday situations, mask wearing does nothing but signal your virtue for the general public. Common sense tells me that strapping a piece of rarely sanitized cloth to your face multiple times a day is probably not helpful. YMMV
