I understand your side and have never been to your neck of the woods but intend on it one day. I like the idea of using the ferry system to see coastal Alaska.

I work for the Ferry system and am against the road. The current proposal still doesn't connect to the highway system and you'd still need ferries but avalanche danger would shut it down most of the winter.

Don’t people utilize the marine highway system to see what makes the inside passage unique? The wildlife... You mentioned a million people visit Juneau every year. That’s great and all but if it is that easily accessible why build the road?

Legislature has slashed the ferry system to pieces. Most of the legislature is from Anchorage and they don't care about the system.

And what are the costs of maintaining the road during the winter? How many cars will it service? I don’t think many people will use it. And plus the mining... is it still part of the controversy?

Would be terrible.

I enjoyed the video you shared. I never thought about this being a big of an issue as it really is at a local level.

Yep, extremely controversial.

I see this as a no brainer then...

It would be interesting to see if NPS or another agency would ever get involved with operations. I don’t know what alaska’s DOT budget looks like but isn’t it partially funded by the feds?

I agree. Like the guys in the video said, imagine being on an Alaskan cruise and seeing big excavators and bulldozers destroying the coastal area for a 48 mile road that wouldn’t go anywhere but a dead end terminal across from Haynes.

Also, who’s that older guy in the video that is for the proposal? And what is his status??

Partially. However the Legislature gutted our budget because of the increase cost of expanded Medicaid. Medicaid cost was 50m more than predicted.

They built two new day ferries to service the road but the present governor killed the project, for now.

If the road went all the way to Skagway I might feel different. But hundreds of millions of federal (and state) money to build a road to another ferry terminal is worthless.

Construction. I'm not sure he's involved anymore but the unions and construction companies are the big players behind the support for the road. I know most of the guys from Ak Mountain Guides in Haines.

There's a mine across from the bay from the current end of the road that would also benefit from the extension.

The proposed ferry terminals and road terminus at Katzahin River is a terrible idea IMO. Winds coming down from the icefield are atrocious and would make docking a major pain in winter.

Once you build it you can't undo it. I'd much prefer an enhanced ferry system to the road at this point. Looks like the ferry system will be removed from DOT and put into a Public Corporation, much like the BC Ferries and Alaska Railroad.

I don't think wildlife would be that affected. Theres a couple Sea Lion haul outs, some Moose in Berners Bay and lots of bear but they have no problem coexisting with the current road system where it is now.

Probably LA

Austin is the Southernmost in the contiguous states (30.267). BR is 3rd (30.458), barely behind Tallahassee (30.4518); that works out to ~0.42 miles.

Google Juneau and see what Google highlights as within its limits. Goes right up to Canada even though the actual town itself is far from doing so.

Juneau is like the opposite of BR, the area of the "city" is 3200 mi^2.

Alaska. It crosses the date line. It's the farthest North, West, & East.

We moved on to cities with the most PHDs per capita. I said it's not Gainesville or Columbia because they aren't in the SE. Poster thought I meant Columbia, SC. Try to keep up.
