I'm not against owning them. I just wish people would own them responsibly, especially the hipster rescue crowd

A pit bull is a specific breed, yet people have turned it into this umbrella for breeds that are only part pit bull.
Let's keep that in mind as this thread goes on.
True. There's the American Pitbull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier; plus any mutt with a block head our big chest.
I'm pretty sure mine is actually a American Staffordshire, but since she's from a shelter, I'm not exactly certain. But she's stayed at about 55 pounds, which is a little too small to be a full blooded pitbull terrier.
I just got sick of explaining the difference to people, so I call her a pitbull.

my folks neighbors at least the husband, was crazy about his two pitballs.
I never tried to pet them or nothin, and never askedhim what was the appeal.
that was long ago, folks are gone and the neighbors moved away...
I have no pets

he means an pitbull is a specific breed of dog, now people use it as an umbrella term for anything with a box head and that theyre scared of. you've got dogos, Staffordshire terriers, American bulldogs, etc. all are what people would claim is a "pitbull" if they say it

Such analogies are ridiculous, imo.
If you look to adopt a dog and say, "Hey, it has long hair. Must be a shepherd mix", it matters what breeds the dog is made of. German Shepherds and Siberia Huskies are both long-haired, but have different temperament, social issues, trainabilities, etc. If you have issues with a dog, understanding what it was bred to do is important.
That doesn't work for people because we have the ability to reason.

frick you nerd!
Signed,

But really, I have smart and intelligent friends that foster pits. They don't have kids. They know what they have. But again, these are intelligent people saving dogs from assholes.

Actually, that's on the high end for a female pitbull.

Pits are relatively small animals, if you see some dude walking around with a dog over 60 pounds the odds of it actually being a pit bull are pretty slim.
Not necessarily. Male pitbulls are often 80-90 pounds. But they are short, often just at a grown man's knees. If their back goes up to your thighs, it's probably not a pit.

Owning a pitbull automatically makes you a badass. You didn't know this??
That's the reason a lot of people own them. Instant badass

No, the true male pit is at most around 60 to 65 pounds.
If you see a 90 pound pitbull, it's not really one, but it's a bandogge, which is a mix.

True. They aren't that big unless they are freaks. But let's be honest, with the exception of people that rescue, there is only one motivation to having a pit.

I think you're about 30lbs too high.

Don't stop there. Enlighten us white trash with your wisdom.

All those dogs you listed cost between $700-$2000 just to purchase. All are just as dangerous but the typical owner of those breeds know what the hell they are doing. Pits is just a catch all for any mix that causes the problems you see in the news. Those dogs cost about $100-$150 or are given away so any jackass is able to own one.

I've had German Shepherds for many years now. I don't recall a 90's outrage over the breed?
90s were Rotts. 80s German Shepards, and 70s Dobermans. Every decade has had a different "most dangerous breed"
I'm not a hipster. But I'm sure plenty of those pussies don't know how to train a during willed, notoriously stubborn dog. You gotta be the alpha for those dogs to respect you, and allow you to train them, as it is with most terriers and large breeds.

Not anymore. Now owning pits is the "humane, look at me, I don't judge a book by its cover, and I can fix this poor animal" thing to do.
