If you take the low end of estimations on the total deaths of the Black Plague, then it's both the world wars. Deaths of the Black Plague are listed anywhere from 75-200 million people. That's a pretty big discrepancy if you ask me.

The upper end estimations put the Black Death as killing 1/3 of the population of Europe at the time, not even counting what it did to China and the Persians.

The Plague of Justinian absolutely rocked the Mediterranean in the early post-Roman period. It essentially ended the effort to Re-Romanize the West and destabilized North Africa, allowing the Vandals to take control.

Well we can also look at the Spanish Flu Pandemic in 1918, killed an estimate of 50-100 million people.

Not on the same scale as the Black Plague, but on the heels of WWI that's some serious damage.

It also doesn't help that there is a school of thought that says that the outbreak of the disease was located in Fort Reilly, Kansas.

Makes you wonder what's coming this century. Maybe society already went through its rebellious teenage angst and we've leveled off in the 21st, but I'm inclined to think the climax of the human story is right around the corner.

We really do.
We are so damn spoiled in this country and generally it's a great thing. I get tired of the facebook post and stuff about how people are scared of the world their kids will grow up in and how bad off our country is.

There can be a murder somewhere or a NFL player kneeling and old people go nuts about how bad life is these days and it drives me nuts.

I wouldn't be so sure about that, I'm pretty sure that right now, we're in what a lot of people would consider the most peaceful time in human history. But it wouldn't surprise me if we were on the brink of another big event.

Germany's nationalism wasn't in response to an existential demographic threat back then as it is now. 1920's nationalism was imperialistic and expansive. Current nationalist sentiments in Europe should not be compared to the nationalism of the imperialist age. And it's certainly dubious to compare Hitler with contemporary nationalist resurgence in Germany.

Also, Nationalism was a response to the major Communist movements underway in these countries. The people needed a strong man to restore order to weak, fragile socialist governments besieged by Communist agitators.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to compare the two altogether. It's just interesting to me that the last time that there was a strong nationalist movement in Germany was during that time.

It's weird to me that a country that has been so important to world culture has allowed itself to be so subdued on a world scale. They're still paying Poland and France for something that took place so long ago.

Germany was like a national metaphor of Jekyll and Hyde. They could be so great for cultural steps but they had that militaristic instinct that really bit them in the arse in the first two generations of the 20th Century.

The 20th Century saw the advancement of the human species farther and faster than at any other time in human history. As far as war goes, it was always a constant. As technology gets more advanced, so will the ways to kill others.
The 20th century saw increased life extension, the eradication of many diseases, political rights increase for everyone in the Western world and some other places, and the general quality of life massively improve for just about everyone in the world.
What a great goddamn century.

Truth. When Communists attempt multiple armed revolutions and swear that they will attempt more, nationalism becomes entirely necessary to basic survival of a sovereign state. The SPD in Germany even resorted to allying with right wing paramilitary forces to help them put down the Communist uprisings immediately following the abdication of the Kaiser. Without nationalist "extremists" Germany and other nations may well have fallen to Communism long ago.

I would also like to add that Germany had two of the best militaries of all time in WWI and WWII. They really were pretty incredible.

The fact that they lost both wars is a testament to the stupidity of their political leaders.

They like to go big or go home. They got checked twice but I'll be damned if they didn't go big both times.

They got screwed big time in WWI in that the Austro-Hungarian Empire was their main ally and couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper sack. But I agree, their leadership in politics screwed them in both wars.

I can't remember who said it in the German high command, maybe von Falkenhayn, but the saying was about the Austro-Hungarian Empire and that Germany was "fettered to a corpse"

And they repeated this mistake by showing such reverence and support to the Italians, who were arguably a worse ally in WWII.

I thought I read something that said that Germany is going through a rash of extreme nationalism especially from those in the military.

Extreme nationalism helped spur on Hitler.

Maybe they need some nationalism to take on the muzzie horde that has invaded them and is breeding their demise at their own expense.
Maybe they need some nationalism to unseat the globalist leaders who have cucked their nation and much of Europe in order to destroy a strong pro European identity.

Maybe nationalism is the only thing that will save Europe.

Need another crusade looks like.

They still would have won WWI if not for the sinking of the Lusitania. The Communist Revolution in Russia had already taken them out and the French were holding on for dear life on the Western Front. If the Americans stay out, the Germans fighting the Ruskies joining their comrades on the Western Front likely would have finally broken the French and either allowed the Germans to finally capture Paris or at least force the Brits and Frenchmen to the negotiation table.

As for WWII, we can say that had they just not made the decision to invade Russia, everything would have been hunky-dory, but considering the incompatibility of Nazism and Communism, conflict between Germany and the Soviet Union was inevitable. If something needs to be done eventually, it's best done immediately.

I do wonder how things would have been different if the U.S. stayed out of the European Theater (continued lend/lease and cash and carry but remained neutral militarily). Would Rommel have been victorious in North Africa and taken Egypt and the Suez Canal from Britain? Would such a victory have forced Britain to the negotiating table resulting in a peace that leaves the Nazis in control of North Africa and France? Would the resources otherwise lost in North Africa and countering allied invasions in Italy and France be enough to allow them to defeat the Soviets?

It's a fascinating topic to think about.
