You're not wrong, but I don't think it's an efficiency decision in most cases. Price is likely the #1 factor.
Price is just the icing on the cake. Loading kids and stuff into a minivan with the sliding doors is so much easier than doing it in a Tahoe or other 3 row SUV. They're easier to drive, get better mileage, have a bunch of useful features on the inside. It's almost unfair to compare them.

Not if ground clearance is the issue
Agree. That's what you give up with a Subaru.

And how often do you see a truck stuck in a lawn in the city?
If you've worked construction your whole life, all the time. You have to remember that most two wheel drive vehicles only send power to one wheel and when you break traction all that power goes to the slipping wheel. Unless you have some sort of traction compensating differential or locking hubs/diff.
People back up on the lawns to load materials for renovation projects, for example.
A winch and a tree is still the best 4wd one can have.

I feel like you're greatly exaggerating how often this happens, but I guess I'll take your word.

If you are humiliated by what you drive then you are a big vag anyway. I rocked the frick out of a minivan when I was a young father. It's transportation, that's all it is.
Marketing folk have done a bang up job associating transportation with lifestyle.
We had one years ago, a 99 Odyssey. A minivan is probably most practical vehicle you can have for moving 5+ people around. Unless you're towing or offroading. It'll drive better, get better fuel economy, and likely have more room than even the full sized SUVs.
But muh tough image.

My buddy recently flooded out his Tahoe when he went through a flooded street. Funny thing is he was following an old Grand Am that made it through fine.
Turns out the air intake for a tahoe is positioned comparatively low given the vehicle's actual ground clearance
fricking GM Engineers. I swear to Gawd. They must hire them out of University of Phoenix.

I believe that photo is an after market cold air setup. The air box is higher than a grand am.
It’s all on how you drive through water as well. You have to push at a constant speed in order to keep the wave in front.
True that. We pulled through historic Houston flooding back in the late 90s early 2000s in a beat-up old Mazda 929 doing just this. We were passing 18-wheelers stuck-out under the overpasses in that thing. We would float, sink, wheels hit the ground, we chirp forward. Kept the bow wave in front of us. Never stopped.
Finally rescued by an AMC Eagle when we got stuck in the projects.

Nope. Nope. Nope
I'm a utilitarian. One day you grow up and realize your needs are more important than your ego.

In our climate down here where everything is always wet? Yeah it happens a lot. More importantly though, when it does happen it fricks up your whole day.
