I just stopped.
Health was beginning to suffer
Was not a nice drunk
Has been 30 years and don't miss
Now tobacco is a disaster for me

Vodka is too easy to drink fast. Don't drink that

Vodka is what gives me issues
I have a similar problem. The few times I drink to being sick or do something I regret it's been on the whiskey/vodka. I'm a beer or wine guy for the most part with an occasional rum cocktail.
I can't touch whiskey or I make an arse out of myself.

It's when I'm tailgating or on a road trip that it becomes a problem
I think it is good, as you said, to go cold turkey for a while. If you eventually feel a desire to drink socially or want to have a LIGHT buzz, then stick to beer and wine. Stay off the hard stuff.
Since you know your pattern and/or what triggers it, then change your habits when you do the road trip (golf, biking, exercise, etc.) and tailgate. Also, keep something in your hands like bottled water or non-alcoholic beer.
Had a buddy that could not get on a boat without drinking so he stayed away from boats for a while then we he eased back in it, he brought an arse-load of bottled water on the boat and always kept one in his hand.

Thanks for the good suggestions. I'm gonna go cold turkey for a while then make a decision after my heads clear
