It was written out of a quote from Robert e lee that was meant to intimidate slaves. Texas white fraternity members would ride around campus singing it in black face as recently as the 50’s. The same white fraternity that vandalizes mlk statue on campus every year on his birthday

I’m not saying the place should be burnt down but if the kids in the band don’t want to play the song the university is smart to not make them.
The song is going away most likely, and I don’t think it should have to but the people that preach cancel culture are going to not drop it

It all seems inevitable. This looked like the first actual push back against cancel culture by a prominent institution. Or at least one of few examples of that. But people here in general basically continue to say that if a group is calling for a canceling there really isn’t anything that can be done to meet them in the middle that they will accept.

Yep, last year the university started a program to “remove masculinity” from the Austin campus. It vilified normal male behavior. They’ve been sliding down this slope for years.

Yea I have to imagine a fair amount of these kids are probably on some sort of scholarship, I am sure threatening to revoke any one of them would get them in line really quick.

Or get the university on the evening news and lead to the downfall of every administrator. This is a no win scenario for them
