Pretty sure that city has a ton of people. I visited there and it was a decent sized city.
ETA:
500,000 people (2.1 million metro). Good enough for largest city in Louisiana.

The whole Levant, Asia Minor, and Egypt were once thoroughly Christian. Things change. The only European demographic that's growing are Muslims. They immigrate there then have bunches of kids and they often don't make much effort to assimilate.
