We've done team building outdoor events and have always enjoyed them.
While searching ATL events, we ran across this unique competition: Escape Room Atlanta
Just booked for the office.

We do team building all the time: Paddle boarding in summer, bi monthly company paid happy hours, monthly half day events, ski days, baseball games, and lots more. We have a low turnover rate.

In my experience they're hated and criticized for weeks leading up to the event, but once they're complete everyone seems to have a good time and talks about how we should do it more often.

We did one my junior year in high school at football camp, it was all fun and games until the tug of war match started, the big rope popped, snapped back and hit our all district starting running back in the hand and broke it. We never did another fun team building exercise after that.

IMHO people have misconceptions thinking it will be all about winning and losing. Then when they realize it builds self confidence and brings out the helping hand and encouragement of the others and themselves they see the power these events have.
The best one we've done has been outdoors in Keystone, CO.

We used to go to a camp and get drunk and play poker. Good team building exercise taking your coworkers' money.

an escape room just seems frustrating.
take them to a paintball range.Let them release some of their frustration.

I think people just hate the idea of spending time with their coworkers outside of the office.
One of the "team building" exercises I've done was a legit competition. You basically had to control resources, the media, and the government of the rest of the team, but you didn't know what they advantages and disadvantages they had. They put the more outgoing "leaders" in a group with the least resources and the most passive folks into a group with all of the power. After hours of bitching between the outspoken group with all chiefs and no Indians, we got our shite together and ended up dragging down all of "society" out of spite. It was enjoyable for me, but I'm pretty sure we were worse off as a group after that weekend.
