Learn how to be content doing nothing 3 months out of the year, but you also need to practice complaining on Facebook how hard you have it

To be certified to teach, would all i have to do is pass the Praxis II and then I'd be hirable? Or are there other steps along the way that I need to pass and look at?

You'll need to do the alternative route program to become teaching eligible. Then, take Praxis II for General Knowledge and in your specialty area - however, most states allow 21 college credits to substitute this...so you should be good for History.

Well, I hope I am right. Every state differs slightly. I teach in MS and have taught in TN....that was our program. LA is also a reciprocal licensure state so I assume they fall into this category.

i'm cert. in texas/alabama in math/chemistry/social sciences/business ed ... you will have to pass the praxis subject test in history and probably some type of state test that qualifies you as someone who can 'read' - meaning, can you understand directions/intent from memos/letters/etc ... probably a basic math competency test ... if you are just history, i would rec taking social sciences composite (i can't remember if there's a separate history & social sciences or if there's just 1 for each) ... since you do not have a teaching/education degree, you will have to prove you are skilled enough to wipe your arse, so you will probably have to do some type of interim first-year teaching program where you take various types of courses (hopefully online) that result in a bayou bengal certificate of education for your pelican state ... nothing you learn will be of consequence, but you will have proved you have basic hygiene knowledge ... you can apply to KIPP, which will run a 'program' for you to get certified, or you can do it through a district (you will not receive normal "luxurious teacher pay" and you will have some hefty bs course work - most districts now have some type of 'alternative' education cert. path), or you can pay the man/state and take your bs education courses at a university ... KIPP's not a bad way to go ... they can weed out students, whether they admit it or not, but there are longer hours/more days (sometimes you get paid for them, sometimes not), but their style can be over-bearing after a while ...

if you're gonna teach, then remember one thing ... worry about what happens inside that room every day ... don't worry about your supervisors, the OT asshats, or anything else ... just worry about what goes on inside your class room each day ... you will get dismissed at some point, harassed by admins/students/parents and disparaged by the general public ... don't look for gratitude - cause you/we don't deserve any - and quit thinking it's about something other than an individual lesson ...

good luck ...

Don't kid yourself. Our school district is ranked No. 1 in the state of Mississippi and our test scores are top 10% nationally.

The Praxis II is a content area specific test.

If you want to teach Biology then you take the Biology Praxis II or the Chemistry Praxis, etc, etc.

You also need to take your PLT which is a grade specific praxis.

If you want to do Junior High then you need to take the 5-8 one, if you want to do high school then you need to take the 6-12 once, and the k-5 one is for elementary.

I believe that if you degree is not in education then you will need to go through a certification program. There are plenty of those in La.

Hey thank you for that. I will check out KIPP. And I wholeheartedly understand all of the backlash teachers get and I commend any teacher that keeps their values in sight.

I've had a teacher and a ptofessor (Victor Stater at LSU) who have made much more of an impact on my life and academia than they know. I really want to play that role in someones life as well.
