I feel like a lot of the kids falling for this have careless parents who willingly gave their kids access to the internet and didn’t bother explaining to them the amount of horrible people on it and to be careful.

Only an idiot pays for blackmail, it's not like they will ever delete it.

I know a young man that this happened to. The sad part was that they were blackmailing him because he was gay, supposedly. The kid actually committed suicide because he was too scared or embarrassed to go to his parents.
It made national news and his dad has been pretty active in DC regarding it. I didn’t know him personally, but I remember him being at my uncle’s house when he was real young and I was in my teens. My uncle, by marriage, was his grandfather and it did a number on him and the whole family.

I am guessing they get the person's real name and then get their contacts through facebook?

I think the scam is they were caught fapping to Arab men if I read OP right.

What if it's something even more nefarious like an OWLIE thread where he edits it after the fact to make dummies look gay?

People who didn't grow up with ubiquitous internet access know that they don't know everything. Counterintuitively, I think kids who have been immersed in this environment their whole lives are more gullible wrt what they see online.
