Pick a profession, they're all thankless.
EMTs shouldn't be in it for the "Thanks"

you've got first hand experience to contribute to this thread, I have been diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis and when it flares up it is indescribably painful(que the womenz "it's nothing like childbirth!") I used to go to a doc that I became friends with that I called Dr. Feelgood, he did not believe in suffering, he gave me his cell, anytime that it came on I could call him and he'd meet me at his office, I thought he was awesome, he had a couple of patients get hooked and sued him for overprescribing, cost him a lot of money
ETA: I can't blame some of his patients for getting hooked on pain meds though, he fancied himself a bluesman, was passable on guitar but his singing voice would drive anyone to drugs, he would make recordings, some cover, some that he'd written, and play them over the stereo system at his office, now that, was painful

That's not a straw man fallacy. You're saying that the relapse rate of narcan is so high that there is no point in giving it.
The other poster is saying that there is a much better chance at recovery for someone who OD's and gets narcan then the person who OD's and doesn't get narcan, because they are dead.
Even if it is a 1% success rate after getting narcan, that is infinitely better than the 0% success rate without giving it.
My opinions are based on a life in healthcare, though, and I understand that not all people see it this way. But when you see someone completely change their lives and start living well, it makes up for the hundreds that go right back and do the same shite again.

I wouldn't go that far. Sadly, there are some healthcare workers who have become so hardened and cynical who very likely feel this way- or their actions and attitudes support it anyways.
Not ALL of them mind you- but there are more than you'd think and very few who would actually admit to it. But it is out there. sadly.
Again, he spoke to many doctors, nurses, and EMTs and they all volunteered their opinion that Narcan is the worst thing to ever enter society.

How are you?
Dealing with a lot in my personal life between trying to have a kid(been trying for 5 years now) and helping my mentally ill father out. Had to relocate the family to AZ after 2016 flood and I think the flood just completely broke him mentally. It's a daily struggle but I just try to focus on the blessings I do have my life and try and stay positive. And use this place to vent out the bitter parts of myself so I don't project that out in my real life
Work wise...left the bedside as a night peds nurse in 2017 and now work a M-F office job as an infection control nurse in the same hospital. And I absolutely love it! Love how in nursing you can switch into new areas and still find a passion for it.
Back on topic....I think any medication that can save lives is a wonderful thing. I think many of us are REALLY quick to judge those that suffer with addiction. None of us are perfect and we ALL have our demons to deal with. Also...many don't understand that they themselves may be one car accident/injury away from facing a future addiction. Someone else posted it that those with opioid addiction issues don't always look like what we think they do. They don't always look like homeless people all dirty and unkempt. Some wear expensive suits. Some wear hospital scrubs.

Sounds like your EMT friend is a fricking idiot. It has been said a thousand times in this thread: administering narcan is one of the most unpleasant experiences you can go through. You are sent into immediate and painful withdrawal. So yes, 9 times out of 10 the junkie (as you all like to call them) will come to pissed off and fiending for a fix. If your friend didn't know this and was genuinely surprised the dude didn't wake up and thank him, he really needs more training and education

Narcan at least gives someone the option for recovery as opposed to dying on the street.
That’s what I’m saying. Give it to them once. I don’t believe they should have an unlimited pass at taxpayers’ literal and figurative expense

A lady I've known for a long time was a nurse. She quit nursing and went into the plastic surgery field partially because of thankless hours of dealing with angry and often times violent druggies that came into the ER.
So she thinks narcan is the worst thing for society?

Giving tit jobs is much more noble work than saving lives

I know you read that I have spoken with 4 people in the field over the years.

next door neighbor from when I lived in FL is a plastics dude in Palm Beach County, lot's of bidness down there, and lots of, uh hmmm, "gentlemen's clubs" there as well, he paid for an almost Olympic sized salt water pool for his back yard with cash paid from a lot of dancers that were making business investments in bewb jobs
