Odd arse question I know. My dad is living temporarily in Europe right now. He is leasing a French car and in Northern Italy.
He got a flat and went to the tire store and they said he had to have the same tires on every wheel and it's aainst the law to change one tire without changing the opposing tire.

He said because of this he had to go to ten tire shops in four villages to find the tires, then they were not cheap. Then he needed two, when all he needed was one.

Just sounds odd.
He's not old and invalid and but just sounded to me like they were trying to trick the American.

I know a lot of people here have spent a long time in Europe.
Just sounded like a BS law.

I'd be very surprised given the number of Italian sports cars with rear tires of larger size.

Well, even with off set rear tires, usually all four will be the same type of Pirelli.

What they are saying is, if you have GoodYear Eagle FS1, all four have to be that tire. If you get a flat on one and the store only has Michellin, you either have to buy four tires or find a shop with Goodyear.

He has some type of Michelins. Most stores he came across with Michelins don't have his type.
He already got the new tires and had them installed. Just seemed like a crazy arse law with no real benefits.

Agreed, but who runs the tire companies in Italy? Think about the country you're referencing.
