Nah, just moved here for the hell of it. Never worked in the oil business

Cool. See, that's interesting to me. For some reason I've always been intrigued by why people move where they move, especially when it's a long distance away. If you don't mind me asking, what was it about Alaska that you had seen or heard that made you want to move there?

I had read a lot about it. When I got interested I studied as much as I could to get a broad picture of what it was like. It felt like home before I moved.

Winter you get like 4 hours of daylight; however the daylight doesn't get that bright. It's like being stuck in a continuous morning skyline.

The sun doesn't cross the sky the way it does here, closer to the Equator. It just kinda hugs the horizon.

Has it been what you'd expected? What has surprised you?

I was just google mapping, Juneau is actually further south than I thought. At first, it looks like you could drive in one day to Vancouver, but when you map the route it takes you way up into the Yukon and it ends up taking 38 hours. Is there a way you can drive due south from Juneau to Vancouver?

Weather here is much more mild than I expected. I live in the Panhandle.

Yeah, you would have to take a ferry to Haines or Skagway, Ak to the north or Prince Ruper BC or Bellingham Washington to the South. There is no road out of JNU.

There's been a plan to build a road toward Skagway for over 30 years but it keeps getting put off. Lots of controversy surrounding it. Still wouldn't connect to the highway system but the ferry commute would be much shorter. There's a decent documentary (22min) about it produced by Costa Del Mar

I'm guessing it's PC for the Eskimo. Like it's not Mount McKinley anymore,it's Denali.

At least the Eskimo should be considerate and provide names most can pronounce

Everyone still calls it Barrow. No one can pronounce that native word.

One of the most depressing places I have been too.

-50 and dark for 2 months, what the heck do you do for that long. Everything is frozen and white, mostly row after row of trailer like housing. After 10 minutes of sex it's tv and drugs. It gave me the creeps

I had a little girl (prob 10) get on the plane at Barrow and sit next to me. She told me she couldn't wait to get to Fairbanks and climb a tree, she had never seen a tree before :(
