There's a great documentary called Antarctica: A Year on the Ice about the people who live and work there.

The winter crew lives there for like 6 months, only 70 people on the entire continent. They get cat 5 hurricane force winds in the winter and there's no way to leave until springtime. Water is too littered with ice for boats to come, winds are too high for planes or choppers.

interesting...what does too much light cause?

Your body just doesn't want to sleep. It's fairly easy to get off work then go fishing or hiking til 11 at night. Direct sunlight T 3 am and chirping birds are hard to push aside.

We shoot fireworks at midnight and it's still not dark.

Biological clock gets screwy before you get used to it.

When I first moved here last April it was tough to get used to.

If you go to a bar it's even worse, it will really Frick with you.

Get to the bar it's light outside, leave the bar around 230-330 and it's still light outside like how you left it

I talk to them weekly. They've been moving a lot of stuff on the ferry. See if you can get across the Strait to Baranof Warm Springs Bay.

It always surprises me how many Alaskan posters we have here. Do you guys get transferred up there in the oil industry?

I would much rather deal with a sun that never rose than a sun that never set.

White nights are bad enough. The summer is more difficult to deal with the light than the darkness of winter imo

Aren't the insects horrible up there for the brief summer, ie mosquitos?

The interior, areas prone to permafrost have really bad mosquito and no see ups. Coastal areas aren't that bad
