That's because if it's a game we're competing against each other and we will do anything to win.
No one gives a shite about personal assessments.
This is true for every aspect of society

Often the same thing, many of the hyper competitive people I have know were actually quite insecure, particularly when they were younger, about what they were competing in. Always concerned they would not cut it despite the fact that they were clearly the best by a long shot. Often it was related to disappointing an adult they were striving to please.
As they got older that could morph many ways. The best outcome looks a lot like it appears Leonard Fournette is headed (or Like Ben Watson is), worst looks a lot like Johnny Manziel.
I think it's more of a perception issue with boys generally being wired to prove themselves better than the next guy (hence the game or competition) while girls are more about proving they meet a set standard (a test with an outcome based on a set grading scale).

Males compete, females choose the winners to mate. It's just biology and evolution.

They aren't. Even as a young kid a boys first inclination would be to go play with sticks and rocks while girls play house.
It's a natural instinct.

I agree they seem very similar but I think it is the difference in wanting to be seen as "the lead dog" in the group vs not wanting to be seen as an equal within the group.

Probably true or maybe even in not wanting to be seen as inferior within the group.
